Naples home base

I have work in Rome in September. After that I will have 5 extra nights. I was thinking about heading to Napoli and taking trips from there. I would like to go back to Pompeii-last was there in 2000. And Herculaneum maybe. And then other nearby areas like amalfi coast and maybe Capri. Any thoughts on what area to stay in Naples ? Or stay out of Naples perhaps ? My priorities are ancient history sites and museums and also at least one wine tour. Prob do air bnb.

Thanks !

Spring of 2019, we stayed in Salerno because we knew we wanted to get to Paestum and Positano.
Your list of interests makes is seem that Sorrento may be a better choice (I haven't been there). It would make your trips to your listed sites faster.

I had several places in Naples that I wanted to see and we didn't.
I'd love to stay in Naples to enable seeing Naples!

I enjoyed Naples, but Sorrento works better as a sightseeing base. The Circumvesuviana train gets you to Pompeii and Herculaneum easily. Ferry connections are better from Sorrento. Day tripping to the Amalfi Coast from Naples is much more difficult. Sorrento itself is a nice, relaxing place with plenty of restaurants. In short though, what Sorrento really provides is options, and the ability to improvise a little is gold around this area. Do give yourself a solid day in Naples though.

N_Kindgom's comments reminded me - Ishica looks wonderful as a place to visit.
We were staying in Salerno, the other side of the world, so we didn't go there, but the Lonely Planet write-up was great.
Capri seems beautiful but tourist infested comparatively
