Naples, garbage, and pickpockets

There was a lot of bad press about garbage in the streets in old Napoli before we went on our trip last month. Rick Steves and others also warned about pickpockets, especially on the Circumvesuviana commuter train. Well there was a lot of garbage in the streets and not just in Naples. It's all over the Campania area, but so what? You just walk around it.

I rode the train all over, including the Naples metro, and didn't have any problems with pickpockets. Didn't see any tourists getting accosted either. Anyone have anything to report?

Yes, there was garbage. I guess it bothered me that the main road into Herculaneum had huge piles. We also braced ourselves for pickpockets, and had no problems. We walked in Naples from the train station to the Archeology museum. No problem. No troubles on teh Trenitialia train in and out of Naples. We WERE shaken down for protection money when we parked our car outside of Naples. What's 15E between "friends?"

Gary,

One reason I hired a driver to take us from Naples to Sorrento on our recent trip (back last night), was because of all of the things I had read about pickpockets in Naples. I don't regret the driver. After travelling for 24 hours it was very nice to sit back and relax in a car. This was my first trip through Naples and I found it a bit disconcerting at first. However, we took the Circumvesuviana back to Naples to catch a train to Paestum. Without luggage, we enjoyed the trip, and no scares what so ever with potential pickpockets. Yes there was garbage, but I think you get used to it. One of the reasons we go to Europe is because it is different from the states.

On a side note, I don't understand people who go to a foreign country and complain that it isn't like home. Oh, well.
