We have three days and four nights in Naples just after Christmas. Has anyone stayed in a place they love? Any suggestions on sights, restaurants, etc? We will have our two children, 12 and 14 with us.
Just have to ask - why 4 days in Naples? Isn't it possible to go to Rome for 3 of those days?
Hi Jennifer. My husband and I stayed at The Hotel Royal Continental on the water. Beautiful views of Pompeii and Castle of the Egg (might be worth a visit with kids). Lots of restaurants just out the front door and on the water. Close to ferries to Capri, etc. I'd recommend the hotel. Large and clean but dated decor.
FWIW, I see that The Hotel Royal Continental gets some really lousy recent reviews on tripadvisor.com
The sculpture - "The Veiled Christ" in the Chapel Sansevero is really incredible. Also, don't miss the Archeological museum with all the artifacts from Pompeii.
Bob, we are staying in Rome (my favorite city in Italy) for six days prior to Naples. We have family there and know it well, but wanted to try Naples for the first time. Have you been there? Thanks for comments so far.
One of the tricks to enjoying Naples is to really lower your expectations. Expect graffiti and trash everywhere. My personal experience is that we did not particularly enjoy Naples, preferring Sorrento by far. However at Christmas time it's hard to know what to expect. Just set the bar low.
Jennifer, I have to agree with Michael. There is no way that I would stay in Naples, if I had never based myself in Sorrento previously. The Sorrento area is just awesome, and is a great base to use to explore tha area. I thought that Naples was a good day trip, and that is about all. There are so many more wonderful places to stay in Italy. When we stayed in Sorrento we took a day trip to Naples to explore and do the Museum. We have flown thru the airport a few times, but never consider Naples a place to overnight in. Please take a long hard look at your decision.
" Bob, we are staying in Rome (my favorite city in Italy) for six days prior to Naples. We have family there and know it well, but wanted to try Naples for the first time. Have you been there? " Thanks for the clarification. Yes, I have been to ( and through ) Naples about 4-5 times. I still remain in the camp of "less is more" when it comes to Naples. Whatever your decision, have a great trip!
Pompeii was amazing. My teenage daughter really enjoyed it. We also spent time in the Archaeological Museum and enjoyed seeing many of the items found in Pompeii. If the weather is good, you may also want to take a quick boat trip to Capri. Touristy, but fun. We tried both pizza places in Rick's book and enjoyed both. Have fun!
