after hearing about the garbage strike in naples, is it worth spending a day there for lunch and riding the HOHO bus?

I am not sure where you are coming from, but Naples is an interesting place. If you had the time, you could take a ferry over to the Island of Capri. Or you could take a train from Naples to Sorrento.
Italy is known for many stikes. And even 2 years ago they were having a problem with the garbage in Naples, however not as bad as they are now.
Not far from Naples is a town..Caserta. It is quite nice there, too.
