Day trips from Rome

Just booked a December trip to Rome.

We would like to make a couple of day trips from Rome by train, especially Naples.

We generally like to wander to see churches, architecture.

Any suggestions and weather tips are appreciated. Thank you!

We spend every Christmas in Napoli. It’s so festive and fun.

The city is great for wandering. Keep in mind that it’s an assault to the senses: loud and chaotic. It takes me about a day to get used to it each year.

Temperatures are typically in the upper 50s, but it does get dark early each day.

Make sure you have a food plan. Pizza and sfogliatelle!

Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli are wonderful even with the blooms off the roses. You'll have to judge the weather's effect on comfort, but they are fascinating.

Naples has plenty of transit, but the train station is not right in the middle of the action, as in some other cities. Pricing for the fast Frecciarossa service can vary by time, day, and refundability. If you are willing to spend one night, you might add the famous Palace of Caserta.

Some people go as far north as Orvieto for the day, because it is such a nice (if crowded) destination.

One redeeming point for the train station in Naples is that most of the organized day tours pick up their passengers directly across the street from the train station in front of the Starhotels Terminus Hotel. I met a woman who took a high speed train from Rome, walked across the street from the train station, and joined a tour for Herculaneum and Pompeii with ease. She was dropped off directly at the train station upon the tour return and she traveled the 1 hour 10 min trip back to Rome.

I second Tim's recommendation of the royal palace and grounds at Caserta. The train stops almost directly in front of the entrance.

If that includes ancient architecture, you can easily travel 30 minutes by subway from the Pyramid station to Ostia Antica, 'the other Pompeii' with amazing mosaics & ancient buildings. I also agree with a day trip by train to the Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli, if you have good weather.

About the weather - We've been to Rome twice at Christmas and it does get cold enough for my Swedish hubby to want a warm jacket, I wear a knee-length down jacket, headband, scarf & gloves.... just so you're prepared!

FYI, Naples has a great transit system and we took the subway from the central station to the MANN museum (used Apple Pay at subway machine), so that works to other places as well.

Another vote for the Royal Palace of Caserta. Especially if you are interested in architecture. Very interesting history.
