Naples - Crime? Safest place to stay

Hi Everyone - I will be staying in Naples one night before going back to the USA . I understand Naples is crime ridden. Is that correct? Sounds like a wonderful town, but for the crime reputation, which may not even be warranted. (Not sure as I have never been to Naples). Anyways, your recommendations on what area to stay in within Naples (that is safe) are appreciated .

We were in Naples for 3 days without problems. It is a vibrant but intense city. As in any large city you need to keep valuables around neck not in pockets. If you are only going to be there for one day I will let other recommend hotels. We stayed by the harbor which was quieter but not as convenient.

There is crime, but it is low level. Pick pockets, opportunistic theft. One would be advised not to wear conspicuous jewellery, like gold necklaces.

I was in Naples for 4 days in June 2023, two of those days solo. Never felt unsafe or saw the place ridden with crime. Naples is Rome on steroids -- vibrant, chaotic, beautiful, loud, full of friendly locals, full of history... I can't wait to go back and stay longer (solo).

We go to Napoli annually for Christmas and have never once felt unsafe or vulnerable. It's a close-knit community that takes care of its own and its visitors. The only sketchy area is the transient zone around the main train station.

We always rent an Airbnb in the Chiaia district, near the Linea 2 Mergellina station. Very scenic and convenient.

I’ve stayed in Naples 7 or 8 times, half of those stays were solo, and have always stayed right by the train station for convenience. Naples is full of warm, friendly people, who may try to get money from you by asking, and sometimes by taking, but I wouldn’t worry about crime like we have in America. Use your street smarts, keep your money safe, and act like you know where you are going. Just like anywhere else.

Been to that area twice, never spent any time in Naples.

I had a friend that worked for the US Navy some years ago and was advised not to take expensive stereo equipment, computers or modern expensive automobiles, due to theft.

Also, pickpocketing is terrible there, but perhaps not as bad a Barcelona.

How are you getting to Naples? That will help determine which neighborhood to recommend. We were in Naples for 8 nights in October. We stayed in the Vomero neighborhood and felt very safe, but it requires about 40 minutes to get there by metro from the train station.

I stayed in Naples twice, once solo for part of the time, and for quite a few days.
I never felt unsafe, and found the people there very friendly and helpful.
I felt safer there than in some places in the US.

If you have never been there, I’m not sure you can say that “pickpocketing is rife.” !!

Like any other big city anywhere, be aware of your surroundings, wear your under clothing moneybelt, and enjoy this wonderful city!

Thanks everyone!!! Sounds like we just need to be careful for pickpockets. Since our time is limited, I have decided to stay in a place near the center. It came highly recommended. I appreciate all of your comments. Always very helpful! Thanks again!
