Naples Around the Train Station

I heard that it is not safe to walk from the Naples train station to a hotel nearby (only 5 minutes walk) at 11 PM or later. Is it true?

I've never heard about anyone being mugged near the main station (and seeing a couple of self-employed women won't kill you), but the definitive answer depends on

  • your gender/age/travel experience

  • how many suitcases you'll be dragging around

  • where the hotel is. Is it in the square in front of the station or in the back streets?

11 pm is not that late by Naples standards and they won't keep the station open only for you: there will be other passengers going in and out the building, taxi drivers waiting for customers getting off your train and so on.

It's as safe as many other major city train stations. What it really boils down to is your perception of safety. One person may feel entirely comfortable travelling at night from the station to their nearby hotel whereas others may find it a wholly uncomfortable experience. I often see a simialr question regarding Termini station in Rome, I feel completely at ease walking arouund the area at night whereas others find it a scary experience. There is no definitive answer.

We were out about that time coming in from the train. There were still a lot of people on the street.

In the day time my sister felt bad vibes on one side street we walked on where young men were hanging out that is all.

Most bus train transportation hubs wherever you go can seem a little seedy

Will YOU be safe to walk that route? At 11 PM I am not by sharpest especially if I have had a full travel day. BUT I also found that some Taxi's wont let you take a ride that is a 5 min walk. I got a bad vibe from the scene around that train station, more inside by the doors than outside, the lower floor mall was really nice. I would walk it, but map out your route ahead of time and walk with a purpose.

I stayed in a hotel that was one long block from the station. I arrived mid-day and was very uneasy walking along, passing lots of street vendors (hawkers?) that looked pretty seedy, but no one displayed any untoward behavior, not even a look that could be mistaken for offensive. I'm a retired woman traveling solo, I walked home after dinner 3 or 4 nights of my 5, coming from the opposite direction and though around 10 pm (february), some of the streets were empty of pedestrians, it was quite safe and I had no problems. There is one area that I would avoid after dark (can't remember the name offhand) but you aren't likely to be around there if youre sticking to the tourist attractions.
