Naples Area Accomodations

Does anyone have any recommendations for a budget-friendly accommodation just outside of Naples close to a train station? We will be visiting Paestum and Vietri Su Mare with no car on the first of October.

How far outside of Naples do you wish to be? Transport is easy within Naples, as you can take a taxi, bus, or metro to the train station for your day trips.

If those are your priorities, the no brainer place to stay is Salerno, as you can take city buses to Vietri, and it is the biggest train station within a tolerable distance of Paestum. There are more or less hourly departures (except some random breaks in the middle of the day making it every 2 hours) from Salerno to Paestum, and a handful of different routes out of Salerno go to Vietri. There are wonderful things to see and explore in Salerno like the duomo and gardens (you can even visit the castle above the town!) and there are many bus routes that go to the coast (you might be able to still use the ferries to the coast, depending on when they stop in the fall) and even to Capri.

Agree with Salerno. VsM is 10 or 15 minutes by bus or train and you are much closer to Paestum on the local train. Naples is 40 minutes away by local train. Also a good location to visit Pompeii although Herculaneum is more difficult.

Salerno is much more manageable and cheaper than Naples. And has a great selection of bars, cafes and restaurants towards the downtown area. Corso Vittorio Emanuele is a wide, pedestrian only, shopping street that leads from the train station north towards the old town. Staying anywhere north of the train station in this area is a good bet.

Have a great trip,

I would love to be close to Salerno, which would be almost half way. Any recomendations in Salerno?

I think of Vietri being a "suburb" of Salerno, as its just up the hill from my part of town (if you walk past the last building on the close side of town you are basically on top of the Salerno port and can see the rest of the city from there), so Salerno is the easiest place to get to Vetri from.....I would say there's at least two city bus lines (off the top of my head) that go that way, but I know many more do as well

I have been super lazy and not wanted to deal with the circumvesuviana from Naples frequently, so I took the VERY SLOW train to Ercolano from Salerno (it exists, but it goes through tiny towns like Nocera and such and takes FOREVER), but you can easily get to Naples from Salerno. You can catch a train to the far side of the ruins (right? its close to the 10 min walk away other entrance, right? I've only been once) in Pompeii from Salerno bypassing Napoli altogether.

My FAVORITE B&B closed, but many folks here like the Salerno Centro B&B.....I would vote anything between the station and Piazza Largo Campo to be good location wise, but for closeness to the station, anywhere between there and Piazza Portanova (the centro storico starts at Portanova and goes west towards Vietri) would be easy.

It's a great city, and when I took my friend she said it was her favorite because it seemed like it was the "real" Italy with Italians everywhere.....

the lungomare is AMAZING to take a passeggiatta on, I would say "don't miss it" but no one will :)

For food, CiciRinella is one of my fav "special occasion" restaurants, the only one I make reservations for in town. If you want a great pizza, my favorite is Trianon, an outpost of a legendary one in Napoli. Nettuno is my favorite gelateria! Gotta get some sorbetto while you're strolling the lungomare in the afternoon, and then after dinner, get one of the creamy ones during your evening stroll along the lungomare :)

Great information! Thank you. I assume I can bus to the train station from the Naples airport?

yes, the Alibus is a handy bus that runs between the Airport/train station/port, it's 5 euro one way :)

There are also buses direct to Salerno from Naples airport, easy transfer to Vietri from there if that is what you settle on.

ooooo yes! I have taken that bus sadly before sunrise back to the airport before :(

But it never lined up for me when it first started to get to Salerno.....

If I have a suitcase would the bus or train be easier from Naples to Salerno?

If the timing works out for you, I find the direct airport bus easier than the change at the train station. Once you are on the bus, you don't have to worry about luggage, whereas on the train you have to deal with it.

Oh yes bus, I actually avoid flying into Naples if I am going to Salerno because I don't like lugging my stuff out of the airport, onto the bus, off the bus, into the station, and onto a train......I like from FCO just the train......so the fewer amount of steps the better!
