Naples archeological museum, luggage, taxi

In July, my family of 4 adults will be arriving by train from Florence to Naples at 11:08. We want to see the archeological museum before going on to Sorrento. We have decided to take a taxi or driver to our Sorrento hotel. I need expert travel advice on what you would do with your luggage. we each will have a RS large backpack for luggage. I see the museum does store bags for free but for lunch, what to do with luggage in the small restaurants/pizzeria so I’m thinking of storing them at the train station. However, that doesn’t make sense to back track to the train station if we can get a taxi at the museum to take us directly to Sorrento. Or, would it be easier to get taxi at train station (therefore, we could leave our bags)? It would cost us more to leave our bags at train station plus the metro back, but is it worth it so we don’t have to haul them around. What would you do?

One plan would be to storage your luggage at the train station -- that would be most convenient. Then return to the train station and take the Circumvesuvianna to Sorrento. And then a taxi to your hotel if it is not walkable from the train station.

It's clear to me that you have already decided against the Circumvesuviana, which is not a ridiculous decision at all. But you have a big difficulty. I was surprised to find a company (that I had never heard of, less used) called BagBnB when I did a Google Search for Luggage Storage Naples. I'm not qualified to recommend one.

You don't describe your full itinerary or your options for the rest of the trip (I mean, only to see how much you hate the following idea ... ) but having been to the Archaeology Museum myself, I would suggest that you consider omitting it. I LOVE art museums, but the Pompeii collection (unlike the Farnese Marbles !!) was so crowded and hot that I have to classify it as "missable" in your circumstances. That is an OPINION, not a FACT. To put that another way, if you have time to ALSO go to Herculaneum or Oplontis from Sorrento, you will have seen just as much special, Un-duplicatable material as you would have in at the museum. Just, different objects.

There is some danger that you'll have to try more than one hailed taxi to get someone who wants the long trip to Sorrento. I believe Sorrento is on the government PDF of Flat Rate Taxi rides from Naples. (Print this out to cite it in case of dispute.) But I would ask my hotel to schedule their land partner to pick me up in an air-conditioned sedan, and put it on the hotel bill. That does mean a fixed-time pickup, of course.

Leave your luggage at the train station, that way you could even walk to the Museum if desired.
I agree with a previous poster that you can easily take a train to Sorrento ( the last stop ).
Or arrange for a driver to meet you at the train station.

I don’t know if the museum ticket allows re-entry on the same day. If it does, you could go for lunch after museum visit and then return to collect your bags.

Tim, we will only be in Sorrento 2 nights and we will be visiting Pompei the next day. Then, off to Rome for 4 nights and home. If it was up to me, I would skip the museum, but the others like the idea. Thank you for your thoughts.

Irene, I wondered the same about leaving the bags at the museum to go eat. I will need to do more research to see if that is possible. Thank you.

The museum ties in nicely with Pompeii itself. It houses all of the antiquities. Well worth it.

Here is a link for the bag storage at Napoli Centrale, https://www.napolicentrale.it/en/service/detail/left-luggage. If I remember correctly the bag storage at the museum was more for day packs and the like. You might have trouble fitting a full size bag in their lockers.

We did the museum as a day trip from Salerno, so I'll describe the train station and ease of getting to the museum.

1) the museum does not store Large Luggage. I checked on it and they only do 'bags' - we adjusted our schedule\

2) we took the train from Salerno to Naples and it was easy to take the Metro to the stop just East of the museum.
It was a short (1/4 mile?) walk to the museum.
We walked the city after visiting the museum and took the Metro back to the train station.
It seems very economic to me that you do the same.

3) per #1 above, I had looked at the Bag BnB and decided that it would involve going out of my way to get to the stated hotel.
I thought a) I'd have to get the luggage there, b) it's location had to be found, c) I'd HAVE to walk back - additionally, you'd have more taxi negotiations.

The museum has small wooden lockers. A few of them are large enough for larger bags. I don't know how big the RS bags are and I don't remember off-hand how big the small lockers are. I do remember that there aren't all that many, so if you arrive mid-day, it's even possible that there won't be enough free lockers. I'd store bags at the train station and not have to worry. When you get back to the train station, get a taxi at the official taxi rank there.

There are pickpockets on the metro, like in every city. And if the train's crowded, traveling with large backpacks won't be easy. OTOH with only backpacks, the Circumvesuviana seems like a good choice. The Campania Express (runs on the same line, just a spiffier train with fewer stops) is even better. According to this schedule, there's one that leaves at 3.39 pm. Be sure to allow enough time to get back to the train station and retrieve your bags and find the platform.

Thanks, Chani! I looked at the express but for about €30 more we can get a taxi right to our hotel door in Sorrento so that’s why we are doing the taxi/driver. For 4 ppl we felt it was worth it, plus, faster. Thank you for your suggestions

After spending a month for the last 15 years in this area, I can't figure where you're getting the price of a taxi from Naples to Sorrento, unless your lodging is picking you up.

Here you'll find the fixed rate taxi fares for Naples.

https://www.napoliunplugged.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Tariffe_taxi_2017.pdf

The fare from the train station to the Archeological Museum is € 13. In contrast a metro ticket is €1,50. Line 2 will get you there in 6 minutes. Taxi could take longer due to traffic, but it would be an exhilarating ride.

Taxi from Centrale to Sorrento, again fixed rate, is €110. It will not get you there faster than the Campania Express.

The Campania Express is €8 takes 45-50 minutes and has A/C, it's there for tourists, locals don't take it!

Your fare of €30 sounds like a transfer from the train station in Sorrento to your lodging.

To reiterate what others have said, check your luggage at KiPoint. It's located opposite track 5 almost next to the police station. Take the metro to the Museum. plan on 2-3 hours, have lunch then return by metro to Centrale to collect your luggage. Then onward to Sorrento by whichever means you choose.

I just wanted for you to be aware of the cost for a taxi to Sorrento.

Right. Napoli>Sorrento via the Express should be 8 euro per person or 32 euro for 4. The price of a driver will be closer to the €110 gerri has listed. Traffic likely will be very heavy and slow in July so rail would be faster.

Thank you for the price for the Express. I had written down €18 pp so that’s why I thought is would be closer to €72 for my family + €15 taxi in Sorrento to hotel vs €110 for taxi (RS guide said it was 30minute ride). With the tickets only €8 pp, it would be much cheaper to do the Campania Express even if we need a taxi in Sorrento. With your experience, I also now know the taxi will take longer than 30minutes. Thank you for the clarification.
