Naples Archaeology Museum en route from Rome to Sorrento

Hi,
I am wondering about strategy for visiting Naples for lunch and a visit to the Archaeology Museum as well as a short walk. We will arrive by train from Rome. Where to store luggage? Guide needed for museum ? How to best travel from train station to museum and vice versa. Lastly, transfer to Sorrento?

The above answers part of your question, I'll do more Searches, because it's a frequent question.

If you want private transportation from Naples, and to design your own schedule, I can recommend Aldo Limos.

Have a great trip.

There are free lockers at the museum but I'm not sure if they are suitcase size, the website may have more info. If you go down one level at the train station there is a subway that will take you within 2 or 3 blocks of the museum. We spent 3 hours there and didn't make it past the Pompeii collection on the top floor. You don't need a guide but some research ahead of time would be useful.

To get to Sorrento, the Circumvesuviana train leaves from the same level as the subway every half hour. The station is further down the hallway from the subway.

When I was there (a few years ago), there was a left luggage facility at the train station. The lockers at the museum were small, mostly for backpacks and suchlike. Anyway, it's easier to leave luggage at the train station than to take it on the metro to the museum. The RS guide had very good step-by-step instructions to take the metro to the museum. It's the easiest way to get there and likely the fastest. Then go back to the train station to take the Circumvesuviani to Sorrento. You can get a taxi to your hotel there, if you need one.

I also want to highly recommend Aldo Limos. https://www.aldolimos.com
I wrote to them trying to figure out a strategy to go from Sorrento hotel to Herculaneum/Vesuvius, the Museum in Naples and then back to Sorrento. They made it all possible and completely seamless. The Museum in Naples is incredible! Worth every euro, especially for a family of 4! Enjoy your trip.

Hi Angie.

I can’t really help you with the suitcases, but there is a metro line from the main train station to fairly near the Anthropology museum, perhaps 7 blocks. Dante stop. You can easily get your metro ticket with your US credit card. EASY and cheap.

RS has an audio guide to the museum. Covers much of the Pompeii related and Ancient Roman statuary and rooms. Free download - Rick Steves Audio Europe. 57 minutes of talk, but you’ll stop and resume. And perhaps wander to other rooms.

Same train station, Centrale, for regional trains to Sorrento.

Buon viagge
