Will be visiting this museum in the morning. Looking for suggestions what to see within 1 mile walking distance of museum. We have a few hours to spend before our trip to Sorrento in late afternoon. Thanks, love this forum
In Rick Steves’ Italy guidebook, there is a self-guided walk called “A Slice of Neopolitan Life,” which you can do as little or as much of as you like. I think we spent about 90 minute in the museum then the rest of the day on the walk and having lunch. It is a bit intense (Naples) but we got a kick out of it.
I would definitely try to have a wood fired pizza. There are many places on or near Via Tribunali which is about a kilometer from the museum. Enjoy. Naples is intense, but with a fun energy.
The Duomo, most especially the 4th century mosaics in the baptistry. The mosaics have Christian imagery (with a few pagan symbols mixed in), but the style is still Roman. It's within easy walking distance of the Archaeological Museum.
When we visited about five years ago, the docent was very welcoming and gave us a great tour (in Italian).
Ninety minutes will barely get you through the first floor. The museum is worthy of a substantial amount of time.
Well, Frank, I do not claim to read every plaque nor study every sarcophagus nor early Roman statue. 90 minutes about does me in any museum.
My choices would be to take a funicular up to Castel Sant’Elmo. The views of Naples, Capri, the bay and Vesuvius are breathtaking. Another site to visit would be the Cappella Sansevero. You can also savor an espresso and a cannolo at the famous Gran Caffè Gambrinus near the Galleria Umberto I.
The RS walk is just right for this, that walk down Spaccanapoli was very memorable. Capella Sanservo and the Duomo are right there and worth visiting. Stop and have some pizza for lunch, and you’ll have gotten a good taste of Naples.
