Naples and surrounding towns

I am planning a 15-16 days trip to Greece and Italy in late July 2013. This is my itinerary: 2 days in Athens 3 days in Mykonos 3 days in Santorini
5 days in Naples, Sorrento, Pompeii, Capri and Amalfi Coast For Italy, what should I skip and where should I stay as base? Thank you

Kim, if this is your first trip to Greece, you might want want to stay one more day in Athens and skip one day in Mykonos. Mykonos is charming in a tourist-driven way but, except fcr a day trip to Delos, not unique. Santorini is much more interestng and has the same or better beaches and bars. Many people use Sorrento as a base, it's easy to access the other places you mention in Italy from there. I prefer Positano or Ravello, but staying there adds a little travel time to reach the other places.

Is that 5 nights in Naples area, so 4 full days? Sorrento is a great base. We used it for a week (7 nights) last year. Naples is a good day trip. See the Rick Steves' Italy Guide for a good approach: Go to the museo, walk thru Naples, special other stops. We arrived just before 10:00AM at the Museo and returned exhausted to the station at about 4:00PM Great day! Pompeii is a half day trip, more-or-less, depending on how much time you plan to stay in the site itself. It will be HOT so go early, arriving when the site opens. Get out by Noon if you can. You can fit in "seeing" Sorrento around your daytrips to other places. Great walking around in the evening. Be sure to try Ristorante Da Gigino. There's also a nice little museum there, the Museo Correale. Good afternoon stop, out of the heat. I have not been to Capri, but understand it is a full day. Amalfi Coast is another full day. You can stop where you wish -- Positano for example -- then continue on. Check out Rick's Guide and note the bus times, crowds, in the summer.

Thank you Zoe. I think I will cut 1 day in Mykonos and add to Santorini or Italy.
