Hi all! We have booked a last minute trip in and out of Naples this October - we'll have six days there. Generally speaking we like history, views, hiking, and good restaurants so we definitely want to hit Pompeii, Paestum, and possibly an island (maybe Ventotene?). Do people have recommendations for an itinerary or things to see and do in the surrounding area that isn't the Amalfi Coast? I know the AC is a bucket list trip for most but I don't think it's really our vibe, especially since I've already been, although it was many years ago at this point so I'm open to considering some options there if I have gotten the wrong impression of the area! Thanks for any tips you might have!
Ischia and Procida are viable island options that are less than one hour away from Naples.
Near Paestum we had an excellent lunch at Barlotti on, a buffalo cheese farm. We then drove down to the Cilento peninsula whch is fullof charming small towns.
RE Ventotene: I’m always eager to read about somewhere new, but places can be so seasonal, so I’d be wary.
Cilento I can vouch for, it would make a lovely excursion, but you could easily spend the whole time in Naples.
I could also see heading up into the hills (not the AC but adjacent) and just hiking a couple days, maybe an agriturismo. That’s not my usual thing, but if I was looking for something quiet to pair with Naples it would be on my list.
If you want an easy and relaxed day, visit Salerno to stroll the Centro Storico, visit the Duomo and possibly the Giardino della Minerva and/or Castello Arechi.....or, since my Paestum visits usually end in the mid afternoon and I am staying in Salerno, I drag my companions up the hill to Vietri around 4-5pm, you will probably have extra time after you finish Paestum before getting back to Naples so you can enjoy the late afternoon in Salerno! You could also just combine a Salerno/Vietri visit for a relaxed day.
I highly recommend Ischia, particularly the Garden La Mortella, created by the Argentinian wife of English composer Sir William Walton. (Crown Imperial March is one of his famous pieces.) https://www.lamortella.org/en/
It's not near the port, so you'd have to take a taxi in order to visit it.
