Naples and Surronding Areas

I will be in Naples for one day, this will be after spending three days in Sorrento. I am flying out of Naples and will arrive mid-day and fly out of Naples next day. Are there any interesting towns, villages to see or visit that could be reached by rail for an afternoon excursion?

You'll be in Naples just one afternoon and you are asking for some other town to visit? Are you kidding me? Naples is beautiful and one afternoon will not be enough to visit what is in Naples itself. Just google 'Naples top ten tourist attractions" or something similar and you'll find more than enough to fill you day there. Piazza del Plebiscito or the national archeological museum alone will stun you.

Ditto what Robert said. Naples is amazing - so stay put, stroll around the Spaccanapoli, visit the wonderful museums, try the neopolitan pizza, espresso, the baba cake. It probably won't feel like a relaxing city compared to others, but it's incredibly vibrant (i.e. you'll need a slightly thicker skin).

An option might be to spend the whole time in Naples and take a day trip to Sorrento . . . Just an observation about what's better.

I am coming from a tour group that ends in Sorrento, my flight is out of Naples. The only reason I requested information about other areas of interest was due to the information I have read about Naples crime issues.
Does anyone have any hotels they would suggest in Naples. I have read that central locations may have problems safety issues. Thank You.

Are you planning on Pompeii? Why not stay in Sorrento the entire time? I agree with the other posters about Naples. It is a wonderful city. We planned one full day in Naples (we used Sorrento as our base.) We couldn't cover everything in one day so decided to go back the next day. There is a bus that takes you directly from Sorrento to the airport. It costs 10€ and is a very comfortable ride. I believe the first bus leaves at 6:30 am. It is the Curreri Bus Line. You can find info online.

I travel solo in Naples all the time and have never had a problem. I notice that the women of Naples tend not to wear any gold jewelry on the street or on public transportation. If you feel nervous about it, stay in the Vomero district and take taxis - but I've walked all over Naples and never felt like I was in danger, and I've lived in Miami so my antennae are pretty good.

Crime in Naples is high by Italian standards but not very high by American standards. The crime rate in New Orleans is 4 times the one in Naples, yet I'm sure most Americans have visited New Orleans and had no problems staying there.

Thank you, that does put a perspective on the city.
