Naples and Pompeii visit

If stopping in Naples to see the muesum, would it be better to see before or after seeing Pompeii?

There are different theories on this, but I think seeing it beforehand is the way to go. And I also think it's worth it to pay for a tour guide at the museum. Ours was fascinating and spoke excellent English.

I agree...I saw it before Pompeii and thought that was better. When you get to Pompeii you can visualize the frescoes, etc. Actually, consider going to Ostia Antica. I enjoyed that much more that Pompeii believe it or not! It's a very easy train ride from Rome. I got there when I opened and had the place to myself for quite awhile. LOVED it.

Just did this tour this week, and preceded Pompeii with the National Arch. Museum. That is the way to go if you can possibly arrange it. Walked in at 10:00 when it opened, and 90 minutes gave us a great feel for what was to come. It was amazing to be able to reference those works of art when we got to the real deal site. If you can manage it, hire Gaetano Manfredi as your guide to Pompeii. He only does small, private groups (couples, families) and Rick Steve's tours. He is outstanding and brings history to life. Contact him thru his website.

I agree with Laurel, Gaetano is an outstanding Guide! He's very popular so I'd suggest making reservations with him as early as possible.
