Naples and Amalfi Coast in December

Hello! I'm planning a trip for two that flies into Naples on December 20th and out of Rome on January 1. I had planned to first visit the Amalfi Coast region through Christmas, then finish the trip in Rome. However, I'm learning that a great number of the hotels are closed during that time. I see that we could stay in Sorrento, but wonder if the attractions will also be closed (or not at their prime) because of the time of year. Should we stay with this plan, or consider going from Naples to Orvieto and then Florence? Any thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Pompeii etc usually close on Christmas Day only but have recently experimented with opening. However, they have announced it at the last minute so who knows this year? Opening hours are shorter but with the lower visitor numbers, and given dry weather, it should be a more enjoyable experience. Sorrento is busy over the Christmas/New Year holiday and you will find accom costs almost at summer levels for that period. Here is last year's programme of events. http://www.milluminodinverno.it/en/

We spent a week in Sorrento last December, prior to moving to Rome. It was great! We left on Dec 22 for Rome, and heard from the hotel that they are absolutely full there Dec 24-Jan 2, a big vacation time for Italians. Yes, some hotels are closed for the season, but those that are open are busy and expensive. That said, it is marvelous to visit when it isn't HOT HOT HOT. Pompeii in winter, on a dry day, is a joy. So is Ercolano. Sorrento/Amalsfi Coast for Dec 20-23 (4 nights), then to Rome for Dec 24-Jan 1 would be an excellent plan, IMHO. Here's what I have posted prior about Rome during the holidays: Christmas in Rome
