Have 7 nights for this area. Thinking about the last 2 nights in Naples, will be flying home from there, with 5 nights for the Almalfi Coast. Looking for a good base to take daytrips from. Will be using public transportation.
You can also take the ferry from Salerno to Amalfi, if that is where you end up staying. The ferry makes a quick stop in Amalfi on its way to Positano (and vice versa).
Hi LaRae from up in Spokane! I think ending your trip in Naples where you will be flying back to the US from is a great idea. What time of year will you be traveling? I stayed in Positano for a week last June and LOVED it. We rented an apartment partway up the hill, so it was easy to get away from the crowds. One day we took the ferry to Amalfi and visited Amalfi and Ravello. Another day we took the ferry to Capri. Another day we took the ferry to Salerno and visited Vietri Sul Mare and the ceramics museum in Raito. We also took the small boat to Laurito Beach one day and had a wonderful time relaxing on the beach and eating an amazing lunch at Da Adolfo. I would also recommend a tour with Christine when you get to Positano (www.discoverpositano.com). It is a wonderful way to learn about the history of Positano and the artisan foods and crafts made in the area (she also does wine tastings). Wherever you go you will have a wonderful time in the area!
eck thanks for the great info. Were going in September. Starting in Varenna for three days, a week in Rome and then Almalfi. Thought 5 nights in Almalfi and 2 in Naples.
That sounds like a great trip! If the ferries are still running when you are there (they generally stop running in late September), you can train direct from Rome to Salerno, and then ferry from Salerno to Positano (the ferry dock is right near the train station). You can hire a porter at the ferry dock in Positano to take your luggage to where you are staying (hotel or apt.). Although September is still "high season" it will be less crowded than when I am there in late June. You will have a great time!
