Naples airport to Sorrento - hydrofoil details?

Hi all,
Returning to my trusty Rick Stevens forum for advice.

I'll be arriving in Naples airport this Thursday afternoon and am trying to figure out exactly how to get down to Sorrento so that we don't have to stress when we are there.

Having looked at the travel options, and being a little concerned about the train and pickpockets given that we will each have a lot of bags, we are thinking that the hydrofoil looks like a good option.

Could someone advise how to get from Naples Airport to the hydrofoil? and which hydrofoil goes to Sorrento?

If you are able to give an indication of cost as well for the trip, and how often the hydrofoil runs to Sorrento, that would be great!

Thanks so much :)

Hi Anthea -
You have a couple of options to get to Sorrento but I'll start with this one:

Bus: the Curreri bus runs from the Naples airport to Sorrento. This is the easiest and least expensive way to get there, if timetables work, as it doesn't involve transfers to Napoli central train station (Centrale) or the port. It's also completely safe:

As above, there are other options if you don't care for this choice but it's what I'd opt for FIRST if at all possible.

Editing to add: these are nice, coach-like buses.

Howdy! Just got back from Italy myself, and while we took the circumvesuvia from Sorrento TO Naples, we took the ferry back TO Sorrento from Naples. I think your choice is wise, the train is pretty sketchy (and I lived in NYC for over a year).

It cost about $24 one way per person, and they prefer cash although they take cards. As you get into the port you will see a huge building with SATVA on it, don't go that way go right instead. Behind the castle there is a long line of ticket booths. Just look for the one that says Sorrento. Could not be easier. We did not buy in advance, it's a HUGE ferry and the ride is lovely. Took about 40 minutes to cross the bay into Sorrento.

When you arrive in Sorrento follow signs for the lift behind the beaches if you want to get up into town, cost one EURO. Otherwise you can grab a cab or SITA bus in the port. Cabs in Sorrento are a rip off, cost a min of 15 EURO, avoid if you can. Learn the bus system, it's a blast and cheap. You won't want to walk up the stairs with your bags, it's over 100 steps and nearly straight up.

From Naples airport take a taxi to the port, it's pretty reasonable from what I was told. Less than 20 EURO. Not really another option, and they are no where near each other.

We ended up using a private transfer from airport to hotel in Sorrento just for the ease and convenience and I would do it again in a heartbeat, especially after long travel day. Cost was 80 EURO and the hotel arranged it.

Have fun, Sorrento is a joy!

We had the same concerns and took the Campania Express train from Naples (Centrale/Garibaldi Station) to Sorrento. No stress, air conditioned and fewer stops, plus an onboard host.

With luggage, take the bus for sure. Otherwise, you arrive at airport, take taxi or bus ( 2 buses needed) to ferry port, and then wait for ferry, carry luggage on, and off, take taxi to hotel again...blah blah blah too much dragging luggage. All in hot weather and jet lagged.

You will have plenty of time to take ferries to the islands and Amalfi coast, you aren't missing anything...and if you get motion sickness, take something to prevent it..the seas are rough and the hydrofoils can make even the toughest stomaches flip flop, they are also very stuffy and only a few styles allow for outdoor, up top viewing. Larger ferries that take on cars are more stable so motion sickness less likely.

The pickpockets can be on ferries too, I had my zippered outer pocket of my suitcase opened on a ferry last year...I don't lock it because all that is in there is a plastic laundry bag and tiny umbrella...

You really need to keep passport, cash and cards UNDER clothing, no matter how hot it is....then you won't worry about crowds...

I don't know where you live, as far as being able to purchase before you go...but I swear by this when in Italy ..don't know if you have time to get one, but if you sew, or have a tailor who can, I recommend this style for your day cash and one credit card that you use without going into the main passport storage.

The Campania Express is certainly another option although it doesn't run as often as the coach ( which is also air-conditioned) and means a transfer - which I'd do via taxi if you have "a lot of bags" - to Napoli Garibaldi/Centrale (these two stations are connected). The current schedule and pricing is here:

You're going to be at the airport. The bus is at the airport. Easy, inexpensive, direct, comfortable, safe, and a pleasant air-conditioned ride. I would definitely use the bus again from the airport.

Oh, and just to add regarding the "lot of bags"? I'm gathering from your previous posts than you're only going to be on this holiday for a week: 1 night in Naples and the other 6 in Sorrento? You should not need a lot of luggage at ALL for that short amount of time.

Really, reconsider how much you REALLY need to take as it's much, much easier to get around when not all loaded down, not that you're intending to move hotels more than once. Also, not having the distraction of juggling many bags allows you to keep a sharper eye on what's going on around you. :O)

We booked a private driver from Sorrento Silver Star to travel from the Naples Airport to our hotel in Sorrento. The cost was 110 Euros total for the three of us. After a transatlantic flight to Frankfurt, a layover, and one flight connection from FRA to NAP, in my opinion it was well worth it for door to door service. We also booked Sorrento Silver Star for our return trip from Sorrento to Napoli Centrale train station, with stops in Pompeii (2 hour guided tour that they arranged) and Herculaneum (1.5 hour self-guided tour). I highly recommend Sorrento Silver Star if you are considering a private driver.

Kathy has given you the easiest way to Sorrento. Not only time wise but price also.
Cost 10 E time 75 min. and it's air conditioned.

If you're bound and determined to take the ferry, take the Alibus from the airport to the port. Cost is 4 E. Time 30 minutes. Ferry cost 12,90 E
Time 40 min.

I loved taking the ferry to Sorrento from Naples and it was simple. Just an easy, quick bus ride--you walk out of the airport door and get onto the bus and it goes straight to the port. I don't understand why people prefer a bus ride all the way to Sorrento when you can go across the bay instead.

For me? It's a no-brainer. No transfer to the port in Naples, and no transfer from Marina Piccola to upper Sorrento - which is where most people stay - upon arrival. If they really do have a lot of baggage to manage, it's just easier to come directly from airport to the heart of Sorrento. The ferries are also not a lot of fun should it pour rain...which it did for us from Naples to Capri.

No right or wrong, just what I'd do in the same situation.

Anthea,

I'd also recommend the Curreri Viaggi bus that Kathy mentioned. It goes directly from the airport to Sorrento, as opposed to having to transfer to the docks to connect with a boat, and the cost is very reasonable.

I have been in Sorrento few days ago and I know the question is solved! :)

I have found most of the information on how to move on this website:
https://www.surrientosuites.com/en/amp/find-us.html

You might end up on pages which are only Italian but my boyfriend and I managed to handle them with a translator.
I hope it will be useful for other travelers!

From my experience, I recommend to take the Curreri bus from the airport to get to Sorrento if you have a lot of luggage.
Sure, taking a cab and get the ferry was more interesting but it was a lot of pain with the bags.
