I've been reading so many thoughts on this....so would love some advice. We arrive in Naples from Washington, Dc at 8am....going to Positano. What is the best way to get there? We don't want to rent a car...though, I'm sure, driving along the Amalfi coast is fabulous...so, how much would hiring a driver be? And/or how would we get to a train to Sorrento and then to Positano?
Just so you know, this is the first of many inquiries. We are going for our 5th wedding anniversary to Italy this September 10- 26. Thank you for any help.

You can take a bus directly from the Naples airport to Sorrento, then a second bus from Sorrento to Positano. This is the least expensive method. There is no rail service to Positano. There is rail service between Naples & Sorrento, but you would first have to take a bus or taxi from the airport to Napoli Centrale, the main train station in Naples, then the train to Sorrento, then the bus to Positano. Plenty of private drivers and taxis are available - just google & you'll find them. They'll of course be far more expensive than public transportation.

Valerie: I was in Sorrento three week ago, I took the bus from Naples airport to Sorrento. curreriviaggi.it It cost 10E per person. It will cost you 150E for the taxi. ( no standard price, no meter for taxi) The Curreri bus will take you to the Sorrento train station. ( one hour and 15 mintues) From the train station, you can take the SiTA bus to Positano. Buy ticket from the store in train station Should be under 3E. Take about one hour.(It cost 7.30E for the day pass for the coast line) The bus stop for the SITA bus is just outside the train station. Every easy to find. You don't want to drive in the coast, it it very DANGER. Have a good trip.

Agree bus is best way to go, it cuts down on one transfer you would have to make from airport to naples train station. Do not drive the coast, just public transit, on bus from sorrento to positano sit side opposite from driver for best view and get off at the second positano stop. if you get off at the first one you would have to get on other bus to center of town. Enjoy.

Val, the bus it right out in front of the airport. You pick up your baggage, and walk a few feet out the front door to the bus. It is big and clean and the trip is great. All of your transportion options are covered in detail in Rick's book.
