Part of our three week trip to Italy is one week in Naples. We plan to do several day trips, at least two by ferry. Although we've been to Italy many times before this is our first time in this area. Would it be best to stay near the central train station, the port, or the historic center? Thanks.
For our week in Naples 7 years ago, we loved staying in this apartment in the historic center about half a block from the Spaccanapoli, walking distance to the train station (and everywhere else we wanted to go to) and an especially short walk to the archeology museum (maybe an 8 minute walk?):

My only hesitation about recommending the historic center in general as a place to stay is that our visit was in November, so if your visit will be in the heat and crowds of the summer, maybe another location would be quieter or more comfortable or something --- at least, "Naples in the winter" vs "Naples in the summer" is the only reason I can figure out why some people don't love Naples as much as we did. We hope to return one day!
Thanks for your reply.
Avoid the area around Napoli Centrale and Napoli Porta Nolana stations.
Since it's your first time there, I'd pick an hotel on the waterfront. The historic center, known as the Spanish District, is nice, but not for everybody.
It takes only a couple of wrong turns and you are in Forcella, where the rule is: "No expensive watch, no handbag, no jewellery".
In Summer Naples is even dirtier than usual because most garbage men take their vacations simultaneously. City Hall does nothing about it not to loose their votes.
We stayed near the waterfront in a nice area, the China, felt safe the whole time. Our hotel was the Palazzo Alabardieri, on a side street, quiet, excellent breakfasts.
I've been there twice, both times for a week.
The first time we stayed in an apartment on Via Montecalvario for a week, about a block and a half off Via Toledo, near the Toledo Metro Station.
The second time, for five nights, right on Via Toledo, again near the same Metro Station.
Loved the very vibrant area, tons of restaurants, shops, easy to walk down to the Port area, and of course easy to get around by Metro if need be.
If I went back, I would choose the same area again.
I was alone the first time for the first two days, and felt very safe.
The people are friendly and helpful.
I loved it.
