We wondering if taking a taxi ( from the cruise ship) to Herculaneum, having the taxi wait, and then dropping us off at National Archaeological Museum to finish with R.S's self walking tour back to the ship is a good idea? Guessing by the guide book, about 90 euros?? I read about the taking the train however given our limited time in port & probably looking like 2 lost tourists, we thought this may be a better option. Any suggestions?

Having the taxi wait doesn't serve much purpose as there are plenty of taxis. Or you can arrange for the taxi to come back and pick you up at a set time.
