Naples

Will be in Naples for a day while on a cruise. Would appreciate suggestions on how to spend the day and get around. Should I hire a guide?

Thanks.

Paul,

You might want to try and find a copy of the Italy Guidebook at your local Bookstore or Library. There is LOTS of information there on the best sites to see in the city (including a "Slice of Neopolitan Life" walk), and details on the transit systems for getting around.

In Naples, the Archeological Museum (which contains lots of items removed from Pompeii) would definitely be worthwhile. There are suggestions for local Guides in the book, along with contact information and costs.

Especially in Naples, be sure to wear a Money Belt.

Happy travels!

Paul - Napoli is a great jumping off place - The Hydrofoils are minutes from the ship - a few hundred yards, and you can go to Capri, Sorrento, or Positano for the day for about $8 euros per person.
I've taken many people to Italy and contrary to what some of the posters will tell you , Napoli is the single, most dangerous city in Italy - No comfort saying that since I'm Italian BUT true! The thieves and pickpockets are rampant and, no matter how careful you are, there is a chance of something happening.
The Amalfi Coast is Incredibly Beautiful - Coming into Sorrento on the Hydrofoil will be something you won't ever forget. The old town section has many nice shops and cafes and , you can even catch the Sita Bus from the central Square and go over to Positano for a look at another Beautiful spot. All can easily be done in a ship's stop. Hydrofoil is about 35 minutes and the day will be special,

Ciao, Greg

Naples is one city where I would really suggest getting a guide. It definitely has its charms but they're much easier to see with a guide.
