Hello All....
We are planning a trip to Italy this Summer, landing in Naples then to Sorrento for first stop. I used the app called Omio.....it gives me a bus transport to get me to Sorrento from a company called Enjoy Travelling. Many have said "Enjoy Travelling" out of business? I would think of going to Naples train depot.....but no trains to Sorrento? How do I get from Naples to Sorrento? Speaking of trains.....I'm a little confused, two high speed trains run through the country? Just need a little guidance!
From Napoli Centrale you’ll take the local train to Sorrento
Circumvesuviana for a few euros
No reservations possible
If you do a search for Circumvesuviana on this forum you’ll find more info
Good site here and this is the Circumvesuviana info
https://www.sorrentoinsider.com/en/naples-to-sorrento-train-schedule
There is also a bus direct from the airport if it fits your schedule:

There are two main train companies in Italy, Trenitalia and Italotren, but sometimes you have a commuter line, as with Sorrento, explained above.
If you are going directly to Sorrento from the airport, there is a bus that leaves from the airport. Otherwise, yes, the circumvesuviana.
I highly recommend the Rick Steves guide for this kind of information. For the cities he covers, there is typically extensive arrival information and connections to other cities, either at the beginning or end of the city chapter.
One of the best places for train information is the website, "The Man in Seat61".
We used a car service from Naples to Sorrento in 2018 but we took this train for the return. Campania Express
Since we will be arriving in Naples after 7 (the last bus and Cirumvesuviana train from the airport will not be catchable) we are planning to take the Alibus from the airport to the train station where we will catch a train to Sorento. Does this sound correct?
Anne, you really should ask you own question because it is fairly impolite to hijack someone else question. There is no Circumvesuvianna from the airport. It is a private, commuter lines that runs from the Naples train station -- lower level -- to Sorrento. You take a bus from the airport to the train station. See the first response to the original question.
Anne, it is quite possible that your only option at night could be a taxi or private car service, but you are not SPECIFIC about time and date. We can't even tell if you might be getting off a cruise ship or something. We arrived late on a London discount airline, and spent the night in Naples, with the Archaeology Museum and pizza for lunch, before taking the hot, gritty, jammed-elbow-to-elbow Circumvesuviana train.
I highly suggest the Search box top left for some general background on this FAQ.
Anne, the Circumvesuviana commuter runs from Naples Garibaldi station (connected to major train station Napoli Centrale) to Sorrento as late as 10:14 PM (22:14). Here's the schedule again (Christine had posted it earlier):
https://www.sorrentoinsider.com/en/naples-to-sorrento-train-schedule
Be sure to scroll left to right to see the entire schedule. If your flight is on time, you should be able to catch a cab or bus to the train station in time to take the train to Sorrento. You can't purchase tickets in advance: you do that at the train station.
Thanks to all for the replies and suggestions......I do appreciate it. Because we will have a long night/day before hitting Sorrento (RDU to KEF.....10 hour layover.....KEF to VIE to FCO to NAP).....most likely I will book a transfer to get us to the hotel directly. I'll l figure that part out. Back to trains.....just making sure on this one....there are two train services from Sorrento? Circumvesuviana and Campania Express? When we leave Sorrento, we will take that back to Naples Centrale/Garibaldi.....and then we will take another train (Trenitalia or Italotren) to Rome. From Rome we go to Siena....then Siena to Milan. Take the Trentalia or Italotren trains? I think I have that correct?
Thanks all.....appreciate the help.
Michael
Circumvesuviana and Campania Express?
It's basically same train. The Campania Express uses same tracks- nicer trains- sort of the "tourist train". Limited schedule (4x/day), seat assignment. air conditioned.
Here is Circumvesuviana schedule

And Campania Express:

Sorrento Insider is a really good source
Take the Trentalia or Italotren trains?
It is ItaloTreno
Trenitalia runs fast trains and regional
ItaloTreno only fast trains
Here are their websites and both have easy to use apps:
https://www.trenitalia.com/content/tcom/en.html
https://www.italotreno.it/en
Siena is not served by fast trains, only regional with Trenitalia.
There is also a bus to Siena that might be your best choice. Otherwise you will take a fast train to Florence- then transfer to regional Siena.
Be sure to use the Italian station names:
Napoli Centrale
Roma Termini
Firenze SM Novella
Milano Centrale
We used this car service and were happy.
After a travel day like yours getting picked up at airport and taken right to your lodging would be heaven.
I believe there are ferries you can take from Naples to Sorrento, I looked into that before changing my trip to stay in Salerno instead.
Hello All,
Much thanks for the previous feeback! I do appreciate it! Train travel....still wrapping my head around it all. Next question if I may....after our little trip in Sorrento, we will have a few days in Rome, then off to Siena. If I understand this correctly....I CAN'T take a direct train from Rome to Siena, I have to go to Florence first? Then back down to Siena from Florence? Is that correct? Just double checking!
Grazie!

Basically, yes, you are correct, no direct train.
The most often recommended route, and what I would do, is to take one of the fast trains to Florence, but instead of train, take one of the regional buses to Siena.
The bus station in Florence is just across the street from the main train station ( Florence Santa Maria Novella), you can walk over, and buy a ticket for the first Siena bus.
The attraction is, the bus is about the same time, maybe faster than the train, and the bus drops you off in the center of town, whereas the train stops at the station below the town, leaving you to get a taxi or city bus to the city center.
