Looking forward to the first week of September when our MyWay Tour will be in the Dolomites. It's only for two nights but would welcome any insights on what to plan on for site seeing. The tour notes we will be based out of the South Tirol area. Thanks for sharing any tips or insights that would help maximize my time there.
We went on the My Way Alpine tour last year in June and really enjoyed it. In the Dolomites, we stayed in Bolzano at Stadt Hotel Citta. As soon as we arrived our guide suggested we walk right away to the Museum of Archaeology where Otzi the Iceman is on display. Excellent museum. The next day we spent hiking in the Dolomites, along with several of our group. Some did short hikes, we hiked about 6 miles on Panorama Trail up to Zallinger Hutte for lunch. Good beer, pasta, pizza, German food and gelato! The My Way Alpine Europe book that you’ll receive is extremely valuable. Have a great trip.
Thank you so much for the great feedback and insights. I appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.
Looking forward to hearing about your experiences in the Dolomites. Ask your guide if there is a way to get to Santa Magdalena from your hotel in Bolzano without renting a car. Enjoy!
Thanks for the tip for getting to Santa Magdalena. Our hotel that we're staying at is in the village of Castelrotto. I've heard a lot of people on this tour stay in Bolzano but for some reason we're in Castelrotto. I don't know if that has advantages or disadvantages location wise. I'd love to know more about Santa Magdalena. From our location our base for hikes will be the Alpe di Siusi area.
My perspective is that Castelrotto is a much better place to stay for seeing the Dolomites than Bolzano.
Thanks Janet for your input. Feel free to share anything else as well that you found helpful when visiting that area.
Hi. Following as I’m on the same tour. I’ve attempted to figure out what trail I’d choose for our one day seeing the Alpe di Siusi, but I’m really struggling. My question is: should I get an E-bike in Compatsch in order to cover more ground or is there an epic trail not accessible by the bike?
Another option is: I read that it’s possible to see Seceda and Seiser Alm in one day. Thoughts? Thank you
How fun you're on the same tour! My tour starts on August 27th. Only five more days until we fly to Milan and spend a few days in Milan and Lake Como. I didn't think about the E-bike option that's a great thought. I'm really torn on which trail or system of trails I should focus on for that day. I'm already praying for good weather. I love photography and hiking so just trying to figure out how to maximize that day while there. Sorry I'm not much help with providing any specific tips or tricks. I'm hoping the tour host (guide) will be able to vet some of that for me once the tour begins.
Laurel Barton, who posts on this forum, and her husband Ric have published a book: Walking in Italy's Val Gardena, which I have used and greatly appreciate on two trips to the Dolomites. They say: "If you only take one hike in the Alpe di Siusi, this [Hans & Paula Steger Nature Trail] should be the one. You take the Cabinovia Alpe di Siusi...one of the most dramatic lifts in the area..." and yes, your tour manager will be happy to explain all of this to you.
Thanks Janet for the great recommendation. I will definitely be checking out that option. Is there an ebook version of the referenced resource you mentioned? It sounds like it might be worth looking into getting since you gave it such a high endorsement. I really appreciate your input and insights.
Thank you, Janet! Have a great time in Milan, Rodney. We also leave Aug 27 to start our tour in Munich. This is our first tour with RS. Beyond excited to explore the Alps!
Deb thank you! I hope you have an amazing time. I’m sure you will.
Yes, there's a Kindle version, but be careful to get the 2025 edition. When I first went on Amazon this morning to look, only the older, out-of-print editions came up. I had to go out of Amazon and Google for the 2025 edition (on Amazon) - who knows?!
You may be able to go on a free guided tour in the Dolomites. The Val Gardena tourism board has activities listed at https://www.valgardena-active.com/en/search so you can check the day(s) you'll be there. If the tour stays at a hotel in Castelrotto they likely are a Val Gardena Active Partner so the hike or other listed activity would be free. We did a pair of these when we were staying in Ortisei and they were excellent.
If you're hiking on your own you may want to get the map "KOMPASS Wanderkarte 076 Gröden, Seiser Alm, Val Gardena, Alpe di Siusi" which has detailed trail info
