My week in Italy

I have a week in Italy at the end of August (I know - not enough time - at least I will be there!) I want to experience Rome, the coliseum, Vatican City and Venice for sure. My plan was to start north (Venice) and take the train down to Rome (where I eventually fly out). I will also be stopping in Venora and Florence (but not for very long - maybe for a night or two).
What do you all recommend as a not to miss spot and/or activity in Venice, Venora and Florence?

Thank you for your help!

Hey jd_earth, it sounds like you are talking about August 2014, in just a couple weeks, is that correct? If so, do you already have your travel reserved? With your plan, flying into Venice and out of Rome would be the best. Is that what you have reserved? Also, you say you have "a week" -- does that mean 6 nights in Italy, or 7 nights, or what? Late August is a very busy (and hot) time to travel, and if you do not yet have lodging reservations, that could be a challenge. Or, maybe you are thinking in advance about August 2015. For us to give any suggestions, it would be helpful for you to share your priority interests, would those be history, art, beautiful scenery, active outdoor activities, food and wine, or what? Italy offers it all. Of course all the cities and sites you list are wonderful, and those alone could easily fill three or four weeks time, so you have some priorities to set and choices to make. Sometimes we see that people are planning travel itineraries that are so full that they would spend most of their time traveling from place to place, and checking in and out of hotels or inns, rather than enjoying a few spots in a more enjoyable way. If you have only 6 or 7 nights, I think that Venice and Rome would be enough, maybe stretching that to include one day trip or one night in a smaller town in between, maybe Orvieto near Rome, which would be on your travel route.

You're trying to do waaaaay too much in one week. I also suggest picking two places, probably Venice and Rome. Keep daytrips as a possibility in your back pocket if you end up not "clicking" with one of those two amazing cities.

To reinforce the excellent advice of Larry and Michael...our family (2 adults, 2 teens) were in-country for a week... they thought it was enough when planning their trip. 3 nights Rome, 3 nights Venice, 1 night Rome. They were a) sorry to go home, b) amazed at how much they missed. Do not add more stops. It's so hot you can only push yourself so much. Take a tour/see a major sight outdoors in the morning, rest a bit or go to a cool museum in the afternoon, enjoy summer-only evening activities after dinner and after dark. Try Foro di Augosto and Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome.

Then start planning your next trip!
