My next Italian Adventure: Updated Itinerary

I have soaked in all your wonderful advice and made a very tentative itinerary. My goals on this trip are beautiful places with water, relaxation, good food, and relatively easy transport. And then there's Florence because I love it and would never miss it on a trip to Italy.

So here's my plan (I have three weeks):

Arrive April 15 into Milan:
April 15-20: Santa Margherita Ligure
April 20-26: Bellagio
April 26-30: Florence
April 30- May 4: Anzio
May 4-May 5: Fiumicino
May 5: Depart from Rome Airport

I will be staying in Airbnbs hopefully (except for Fiumicino).
I will also take day trips where feasible, and would love recommendations from those who have done this from any of these spots.
Based on my research, most students return to school from Easter break on April 15th. I know there are two national holidays in this time period, so I am trying not to travel on those days.

Thanks for any thoughts!
Beth

My only input, based on suggestions from this forum and personal experience this summer, stay in Rome proper the night before your flight. You’ll have a great meal, and your hotel can arrange a taxi to FCO whenever you need it. Fares are fixed. You’ll be in Rome, not Flumicino. The only reason I can see to stay in Flumicino would be if Ostia Antica is on your must see list as it’s close.

Without knowing if there is a reason for the order (unless it is the holidays), wouldn't it make sense to start in Bellagio and then move south?

That's a very good point, Valadelphia. There's no really good reason for starting in Santa Margherita Ligure.

That might save you a little time backtracking and maybe give you slightly warmer time in SML--sometimes a week or so can make a difference!

While in Santa Margherita Ligure, make sure you visit nearby Camogli.

I agree, Bellagio first (reasonably close to Milan) and then SML. Otherwise you're backtracking. Unless you're looking for beach time, I'd stay in Rome for 2 nights as it might be easier and cheaper to get to the airport from Rome than from the town of Fiumicino. It's easy to travel around Lake Como by ferry from Bellagio, and Portofino is easy to reach from SML (bus, boat or even walkable). If you want to visit Cinque Terre, it's also an easy day trip from SML (under an hour each way).
