My dilemma: Should I rent an apartment on Grand Canal?

I went ahead and threw caution to the wind. I fell in love with the photos of the view onto the Grand Canal of à rental in Venice near it crosses the Connaregio Canal. Now I’m concerned by the noise I’ll hear from vaporetto, delivery and patrol boats, honking, etc. It apparently gets quite loud.

I asked the landlord to send me an audio recording but he isn’t in Venice now.

I did ask him if the windows were double pane glass. He said No.

Now I’m having second thoughts, being quite sensitive to noise, human voices and loud music but not necessarily boats. I’ve never stayed in a similar environment.

I’ve viewed live cams of aerial views of the GC but they play music loud enough to cover completely any sounds from horns or motors.

Any suggestions? I don’t want to be miserable for a month.

Thanks.

Earplugs and a white noise app. Just in case it bothers you?

Much more important: Be sure that this appartement is legal. There has to be a CIN-code at the advertising. With these code you can check if it is legal via the website of the Tourismusministerium. And the appartement has to be booked at least for 2 nights.

On our first visit to Venice our apartment looked out on the Grand Canal and a smaller side canal. We moved to another apartment behind this first one and it was much quieter. Avoid the Grand Canal if you are noise sensitive.

Also consider the mosquitoes. It seems Venice accommodations rarely have screens.
Personally, I would go for an apartment on a side canal and some height above the ground level. I had an apartment book a few years ago and it flooded the last major flood in 2019. Oh the damp and the mold....

It is so tricky…and 26 days is long time. I know I like the foghorns of Golden Gate in the fog. But vaporettos? Never bothered me before but then I was en route somewhere, not sitting at home.

Voting with Laurel, Denny. LOL, my husband snores and snorts half the night so earplugs plus some white noise from a fan save me from having to relocate to the couch! When is your trip? Will it be at a time of year that you'll either want to run AC, if the apartment has it, or have windows open?

Are you worried about sleeping, or daytime as well? If both then I'd suggest moving. It sounds like this will worry you instead of being a fun viewpoint. I had a hotel room once on Siena's piazza that got so noisy as the day went on, that it was just not enjoyable. Yes I could sleep with ear plugs, but I didn't enjoy the room in the evening either
Were there reviews of the apartment that mentioned if it was noisy or quiet?

Other option if you have 26 nights, why not split your time? Find a quieter second place.

hey hey Denny
this is my own opinion, stay away from grand canal. it is and can be loud with every kind of boat up and down, sirens, people. stay away from the very busy piazzas that get really busy and sometimes loud. how many people, budget in euros and what time of year?
couple places/sites we stayed you can check out.
cabadoer-veniceflat.it
few apartments to view, husband/wife that own it, great couple. we loved this place in san polo area behind frari church. small elevator, washing machine, we stayed in west studio. send message thru contact.
visititaly.com
look at apartments available in venice if something suits your fancy
la levantina
we loved this place also, gated and short walkway to ground floor, outside patio, owner was great. there is a small canal behind kitchen/living room. was quiet, shops/restaurants/grocery store nearby
albergo marin
in the santa croce area. scroll down to apartments to see what is offered.

looking for places drove me crazy with so many to investigate but when you find one book it and don't look back. venice seems to be busy all year. enjoy and good luck

I stayed in a hotel about five mins walk from the GC and it was noisy at night even though my room overlooked a garden. Think of the GC as Venice’s main thoroughfare ( which it is). The Vaporettos run all night, though obviously not as frequently as in day time and their engines are noisy. Then there is the sirens and engine noise from ambulance and police boats, early morning garbage pick-up boats etc.

Staying on the Grand Canal might be novel for a night or two.

A month on the Grand Canal could well wear thin on you.

I spent the whole afternoon trying to find something as a replacement. Oddly there don’t seem to be that many apartments for rent on the Grand Canal, at least not on Airbnb or Vrbo. Very frustrating. Most of Connaregio is disappointedly taken up by small hotels on the small side canals as well. I have a budget of no more than $5,000. I definitely do not want to,stay in a hotel room for almost a month but Im not coming up with leads. Venice is so Disneyland now. Everywhere there are hordes of people and there is so little space. Maybe I should be looking at Castello…

I now think I’m kind of stuck, as I’m not finding an a good alternative to the GC apartment. I did a close search of the neighborhood and it is not at all tranquil, either. I guess I fell in love with the idea of seeing the Grand Canal directly from my own window, a huge sky as opposed to being on the side of à Rio.

You might look into the Castello neighborhood. We stayed there one trip and it was very peaceful except, perhaps, for the early morning church bells!

Do you mean Cannaregio? I can't find anything with your spelling.

I think you will have a wonderful time. As others have suggested, bring earplugs for sleeping. I really love peace and quiet in my everyday life but the idea of staying on the Grand Canal where I can sit and watch the city go by, despite the noise, actually sounds really great to me. "A vacation from myself", to riff off a Seinfeld scene ;). Venice is very busy near St Mark's Square and around the top tourist destinations but most of the city is actually quite peaceful, particularly before 10am and after 5pm and if you simply head a few blocks away from the crowds. I was there a few months ago and found that even the Grand Canal seemed peaceful compared to my little hometown city and I was frequently the only person on an entire calle. I also enjoyed getting up early and watching the little barges pull in along the GC and marvelling at how Venice runs on human-powered trade. In the end, I think it will come down to how you expect to spend your time in the room. Happy travels!

Whoops - I just commented on your other post telling you to enjoy your stay in the Grand Canal apartment, but now I see here that you're not sure you've made the right choice.

Regarding the other apartments you've found, do you have a shortlist? Maybe we could help you pick.

It might also be worth looking beyond Airbnb and Vrbo and trying a local agency. Not all listings are on those platforms, and especially for a longer stay you might be able to get a better deal.

I’ve been losing a lot of sleep over this one! I’ve actually looked at booking.com, which I’ve assumed has mostly hotels. There is no way I can tell to predict how I’d feel about the place I have in mind.

BUT to be blunt, I feel very uncomfortable in the Rialto and St. Marks. Much of Cannaregio is way too bustling and crowded for me.

What if you split your stay between different apartments? By doing shorter stays in multiple places, you might discover new opportunities and get to experience different areas as well.

For Pat from Google maps : "Castello covers a large vibrant area, with one section bordering St. Mark’s Square and dotted with luxury hotels. Farther from St. Mark's, the neighborhood gets more laid-back, with casual bars where locals stop in for a glass of wine. Shops and eateries catering to all budgets line buzzing Via Garibaldi. In alternating years, the Giardini della Biennale park hosts the Biennale exhibition of contemporary art."

If you really want to get away from it all, look at Sant'Elena, the farthest east area of Venice. It's so peaceful out there.

After two weeks of thinking and rethinking this, I finally decided on an attic loft and then a 3day stay at an apartment in a rio, both in Connaregio. Gave up the idea of an apartment on the GC. My host there sent an audio. What is really noisy are the sirens, not really horns, that emergency medical boats make. Also, my host said that they use their horns liberally to indicate they’re entering the canal, or maybe even making a turn, which happens frequently.

I wish someone would do a report on traffic on the GC.
