Hello all -
This September we'll be flying into Milan and I have a question about the Malpensa Express to Milano Centrale and then the train to Varenna-Ensio. We land approximately 10:30 am. I can buy tickets now for the Express to Centrale, leaving at either 13 or 43 minutes past the hour. I can also buy tickets from Centrale to Varenna-Ensio, all leaving at 20 minutes past the hour. If I buy these tickets in advance, and our flight into Milan is delayed, are the tickets still good on a later train? I thought I read on this Forum that they are good for an additional 6 hours, but I could be mistaken. We're landing on a Friday - that's why I'm considering buying them in advance in case all of Milan wants to go to the Lakes for the weekend.
Thanks for your help in advance.
Larry,
Both of the trains you'll be using are a Regionale so the tickets should be good for a period of 4-6 hours. The time seems to be based on the route length and since those are both very short routes, the validity may be 4 hours. It's very easy to buy tickets on arrival but in this case since you're not connecting with a fast train, buying advance tickets should work.
Note that the Malpensa Express has two routes, one going to Milano Centrale and one to Milano Cadorna. Be sure to board the correct train! Also, BE SURE to validate your tickets prior to boarding the train or you'll risk hefty fines!
For the trip to Varenna-Esino (note sp.), I'd suggest sitting on the left when facing forward as that will provide the best views. The train will go through a tunnnel just before arrival in Varenna. The trip is 1H:03M and you'll need to be ready to disembark promptly when the train arrives, as it doesn't stop for long. It's a good idea to note the method for releasing the door, as this can vary on Italian trains.
Happy travels!
