I will be arriving at MXP and will be going to Bergamo Citta Alta. Is the Orio Shuttle my best choice? Where in Bergamo will it drop me off? Do I need to make a reservation for the Orio Shuttle?
I think whether Orio Shuttle is your best bet will depend on when you get through all the procedures at Malpensa and are ready to board a bus. Orio Shuttle departures are not super frequent, but they have the advantage of not requiring a transfer.
Sudtirol/Alto Adige runs buses from Malpensa to the Bergamo Airport (after which you'd need to take a bus into town). The schedule is less frequent than Orio Shuttle's but might turn out to work better for you, depending on what time you are ready to board the bus.
Another possibility is a train to Milano Porta Garibaldi Station and a change to an outbound train to Bergamo. Schedules can be found on the TrenItalia website. Your origin would be Malpensa Aeroporto. There are more trains than buses, and this routing is all-regional trains, so no worries about the fare skyrocketing if you wait to buy our tickets until you get to the train station at Malpensa.
Thanks, acraven, for all of the choices. My plane lands in MXP at 1:50 p.m. and the Orio Shuttle leaves at 2:40 p.m. I'm hoping that is enough time to depart the plane and board the shuttle? Any idea where at MXP I can catch the shuttle? Do I need a reservation?
I cannot answer those questions, but MXP is a large airport, and I think you're probably being optimistic about how long it will take to get to the train or bus. Let's see what those who've flown into MXP think.
50 minutes from when the plane parks at the gate, assuming it is on time, to be out the door to the bus stop seems extraordinarily optimistic.
I checked Trenitalia and the train from MXP >> Milano Porta Garibaldi Station >>Bergamo leaves every half an hour. Looks like the train is a better choice over the limited Orio Shuttle. Does anyone know how Milano Porta Garibaldi Station compares to Milano Central?
There's some information here, including a platform diagram. I'm not familiar with that station. It's fairly large.
