MXP - How early to arrive for departure?

I searched topics on this but didn't find any current advice.

We are wrapping up our much-anticipated trip to Italy on a Friday in mid-October. We'll be flying back to the U.S. from Malpenza Airport outside of Milan. Our adult daughter's flight departs at 09:00. Ours doesn't leave until 14:20 so we'll head to the airport later. We will not be checking any bags and we'll check in online the day before departure.

The airline's advice is to arrive 3 hours early. Ugh. I understand that an earlier arrival can cover more contingencies, and I realize there is additional exit screening, but I'm wondering about people's experiences of late. Can we (1420 departure) get away with arriving 2 or 2.5 hours in advance? Does our daughter need 3 hours because her flight time falls in the busier departure window?

Thanks for your advice.

My experience at MXP was that they won't let you walk back to the gate until close to boarding time. I don't remember how close it was, but they make you wait and queue up. I recall it being an hour lead time; I went and had some breakfast while I waited outside the secure area.

If you aren't checking bags, then I think you would be ok with the 2-2.5 hour window.

I was flying from MXP back to Atlanta, GA in the US.

@Joe32F. No, not to a Shengen country. As stated in the original post, we're flying back the the U.S. Our daughter is flying to JFK in New York. We're flying to Philadelphia.

Lpage53, you can leave whenever you want to, but ultimately, if you miss your flight, you’re only cheating yourself. The airport regulations are there for a reason, because they know there can be delays. Other people’s experiences do not matter because they were there under different circumstances. Plus you’re going from Schengen to non-Schengen.

Do yourself a favor and get there by the allotted time.

Under most circumstances you won't need 3 hours. But there is always the chance
of delays. If it were me, and I had boarding pass in hand, no bags to check, and
especially some type of fast track for security, I'd plan to get there 2-2.5 hrs ahead,
esp since I'd need an hour to get to MXP from downtown Milan. But that's me.

Without knowing your level of experience and savvy with dealing with possible abnormal
circumstances, I don't think you can expect anyone to advise you to show up later.

2.5 hours is probably more than enough, especially if you have already a boarding pass and nothing to check in. Malpensa was really really busy when I used it in the early 2000s, when Alitalia had moved its hub there from Rome. But since Alitalia (now ITA Airways) moved the hub back to Rome Fiumicino after 2007, Malpensa is not as busy.

I remember MXP requiring three hours advance on intercontinental flights since immemorable time, well before the EES problems.

We flew out of MXP last week. It is very big, very crowded, generally confusing and overwhelming. It took us 2 hours and 15 minutes until we finally reached our gate. It was not fun. Others were not as lucky. I recommend 2 1/2 - 3 hours.

@pjcurran75, thank you for reporting your experience. It solidifies our decision to get there 3 hours before our flight.

Thank, too, for the update on the airport's name. It would have been disconcerting to have the airport "disappeared." LOL.

In Summer 2025 we stayed out close to the airport at the Hotel Osteria della Pista the night before our morning flight back to the US. Super convenient to get to the airport via their shuttle service. Saved the long train ride in from Milan. Plus their restaurant was great for our final dinner before heading home (IIRC, they also will do a breakfast bag if your airport departure is before breakfast opens).

As much as I don't arrive too early for my domestic flights in the US, I would heed the others advice and be there 3 hours early. Online check in is great until they tell you you can't when you try and then have to check in at the counter, which has happened a few times with us. Plus, with the EES uncertainty that can easily add another hour to your check in experience.
