Must-see stops from Florence to Rome?

We want to travel through Tuscany on our way from Florence to Rome, but aren't really sure if there are certain routes we should go, places to see, etc. Anyone have any suggestions?

It depends entirely on what you want to see. Look at Rick's book, or another book that describes Tuscany, pick the things you (not we) want to see, then go to viamichelin.com or do the free download of Google Earth, input the destinations of the places you want to see, and those sites will help you plan your driving itinerary by showing you maps and recommended driving routes. If you want to do independent travel, you have to do the above work--you wouldn't want us to have all the fun planning your trip, would you? If you want us to do that, you have to take us along. And you are driving, right?

I would recommend taking SR222, the Chianti Highway (Chiantigiana), between Florence and Siena. It is spectacular, and it's an excellent way to check out a few of the hill towns.

If you are planning on making your trip from Florence to Rome in just a day I would suggest stopping in smaller towns. The big tourist spots (Siena, Orvieto, Assisi) will be crowded and too much time will be spent trying to park etc. There are many small hilltowns that are wonderful to see, and no tourists. Find a map and pick out a route.
