Sadly my time is limited in Venice, so besides St. Marks Square/Basilica and nearby attractions, what else should I absolutely not miss in Venice? Also, restaurant recommendations would be very much appreciated! Thank you.
Don't miss just wandering around aimlessly and getting hopelessly lost! With one day that is the about as much as you can do... go a few streets off the 'main tourist area' and it will be like a different city.
also, with just one day I would not miss the sunrise. Get up early, go down to the water and watch Venice wake up!
Eat? Anywhere in Italy... gelato
Thank you Terry! I hadn't thought about watching the sunrise but that would be beautiful I'm sure.
Vaporetto! Maybe once during the day and another trip at night to see everything lit up. RS audio tour is good to let you know what you're passing (and which way to look to see it.)
Like stated previously, just wander. Go outside the main areas, its wonderful. People often complain about the Venetian food, but if you get away from to tourist areas, it's fantastic. I wish I could remember some of the names of the places we stopped, but I cant help you there. The good news is, if you just wander, you'll find what you're looking for. That's what was so great about Venice to me. We stayed in Canareggio, we made it to the Rialto and St Marks, we were never on a water taxi once (except from the airport).
Just wander.
I agree with the wandering and the shopping (venetian glass is so beautiful!). Seeing St. Mark's at night was also a highlight of our trip with the lights and the orchestras playing on either side. It's far more relaxing than during the day time when the cruise ships are in town. I loved Venice -- I kept thinking I was on a movie set or in a fairy tale, it just seems surreal.
For restaurants, we really enjoyed La Zucca for lunch and Do Farai for dinner (both were recommendations from our Airbnb host).
Many people think its kitschy, but I say take an evening gondola ride. All your friends back home will ask you if you did. Not doing this would be like visiting San Francisco and not riding the cable car.
As has been mentioned here in the past, the cicchetti tour by Alessandro (sorry if I didn't spell right) was a high point. I believe we met the group (about 10-12 people) AT 6 pm for a tour of selected wine bars with appetizers. It was a fun way to spend an early evening and socialize. And agree that wandering is great in Venice.
