Must see coastal town other than Cinque Terre

Hi All,

I have been to Italy several times before but will be traveling this summer with some friends who have never been. We haven't nailed down the total number of days for the trip yet but it will probably be around 10-12. The only two locations we have decided on are Rome and the Lakes. They have heard me talk about how wonderful the Cinque Terre are and would like to visit. However, I have already been there three times and would like to try something new. Any suggestions for a must see coastal town that makes sense to stop in while traveling from Rome north to the Lakes? I have heard that Viareggio is a good option and is close enough to do a day trip to Lucca.

Viareggio is quite nice. Also consider Lerici and Portofino if you want to stay within range of the CT.

We really enjoyed Portovenere and Camogli this past September. We visited both towns as days trips from the CT but either town would make a lovely stay for a night or two if you're looking to stay somewhere other than the 5 CT towns.
