We are stopping on a cruise and will have an afternoon open for things to see/do in Naples. I am looking at the archaelogical museum, but we will be going to Pompeii in the AM, so we will play that by ear with our kids.
There is the museum dedicated to the artifacts from Pompeii. of course. The kids will want to see the adults-only area in the museum. It's not too racy for most of us and maybe even your kids if they are teens. There is "original" pizza, said to be as it was invented. And there are fantastic pastries in pastry shops. Yum! Naples is interesting in the intensity of the crowdedness, cars parked everywhere, jovial street hustlers, etc. I find the place "too much," but lots of people love it.
The museum is simply a WOW. Pompeii has the buildings and streets, the museum has all the gorgeous decorations - mosaics, frescoes, sculptures and tons of them. Rick's Italy books have great directions for getting to the museum from the train station, if you're taking the train back from Pompeii.
After the Archeological Museum, you can take the funivia up to the hills above Naples for great views, or down at sea level walk along the waterfront to the castle and have dinner at one of the fish restaurants or pizzeria there if you have time on your way back to the port.
The museum is great and I would also grab a yummy pizza. After that if you have time one of my favorite all time churches is in Naples. Its small but has amazing marble sculptures one of my favorites is the veiled Christ. Its quick and I also think your kids would love it. Its called Cappella Sansevero. Closed on Tuesdays. www.museosansevero.it
All of the important items from Pompeii are in the museum. Pompeii, itself, is mostly the buildings. The adult section i interesting and not as mild as some would like you to believe. Remember, it was once under lock and key and required written permission from the Pope for entry. Age of the children???? Nothing that high school students have not seen.
From the museum it is an easily and interesting downhill walk back to the harbor and your ship. Lots of interesting little sites along the way plus food, wine, and beer. Do Pompeii on your own and not via a ship excursion.
I agree you MUST the the statue/marble of the Veiled Christ
in Museo Cappella Sansevero.
I really liked the Archeological Musuem and the items that were removed from Pompeii
they are really interesting
But,
I was blown away by the Veiled Christ. I still don't understand how that could
be carved in Marble - it is magical.
I second Frances's recommendation of the Cappella Sansevero. I loved the Veiled Christ, but was even more blown away by Disillusion. The way the sculptor made marble look like ropes was breathtaking. And then there's the creepy Anatomical Machines in the basement...While this place is small, I consider it a must-see.
