Music, Movies, Books

Need some new ideas to get our travel group inspired for a trip coming up in Feb to Italy.
All women on this trip and a number of photographers.
Going to Venice, Florence and Rome. We will be going to Carnavale.... So any suggestions?
Anything specific to Carnavale would be great. I always make a travel cd of music and could use some new ideas!
Thanks... I always get the greatest suggestions from the RS group...

TK this old film set in Venice comes to mind: Summertime with Katherine Hepburn (1955). I enjoyed it because you can recognize some of the places in the film as they still look the same.

Try "Rome Adventure". It's a minor film starring the always wonderful Suzanne Pleshette. Great travelogue scenes of Rome, and then the 2 main characters (Troy Donahue!) tour around Italy as well. Also notable for the wonderful Al Di La. This film also got me to taste Strega.....

Music - Botticelli Triptych , by Ottorino Respighi . An evocative musical interpretation of " Primavera " , " The Adoration of the Magi " , and " The Birth of Venus " . Incredibly beautiful music .

Since some of them are photographers, you HAVE to see "The Great Beauty/La Grande Bellezza". It won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 2014. It was filmed in Rome by Paolo Sorrentino, and it's stunningly beautiful.

If you can find it, Nudo di Donna, or Portrait of a Woman, Nude, filmed in Venezia partly during Carnevale.

There's the Henry James novel 'Wings of a Dove', and the movie version thereof, set in Venice. Also, the photojournalist Marco Secchi has self-published a book 'The Venice Carnival', available either in hard copy or as an e-book.

"Death in Venice" is a novel by Nobel prize winner Thomas Mann, adapted for the big screen by Luchino Visconti with music by Gustav Mahler - quite the classic!

Vivaldi's Four Seasons for your music cd since he was born in Venice.
Rome: The Agony & the Ecstasy by Irving Stone (about Michelangelo & the Sistine Chapel) is a good read.
I can't believe nobody has suggested watching "Roman Holiday" (the original version with Audrey Hepburn & Gregory Peck)! I think she won an Oscar for that role.
