Going to be travelling in mid July - will be in Florence for several days and want to visit Accademia and Uffizi. Should I be buying tickets online before I get there? Im just wondering how hard it might be (since I know July is busy) to get in without a long line (and wasted time). Probably not going to get the Firenze Card as I dont think I would get full use out of it otherwise.
Yes, you need to make reservations. If you don't have reservations, my impression is that very late in the day is the easiest time to get in without reservations.
If you are staying in a hotel, simply have them make the reservations for you. Then you pick up and pay for your tickets that day. It's that easy. If you don't have reservations, you can usually almost walk right in the Accademia about an hour before it closes. It only takes 45 minutes to see it, and that's if you linger or want to see a special exhibition.
Please buy your tickets online before you go. The queue is super long and they hardly move because visitors with reservations are let in first, thus those queueing to buy tickets ended up waiting and waiting... Accademia & Uffizi can be done in one afternoon. Mine was 3pm - Accademia (you only need at most 1.5 hours at Accademia but most people are done in 1 hour) & 5pm - Uffizi (2 hours or so, museum closes at 6.50pm so there's ample time to roam around). By the way, if you arrived earlier or later than your reserved timing, they'll still let you in so don't worry.
Went to Florence last weekend. Showed up about 20 mins before the Accademia opened and had about a 5 min wait to get in. Showed up at the Uffizi around noon and had a long line but there are people who work the line selling skip the line tics which cost an extra 9 euro.
Especially for July, make reservations for the Uffizi; follow their directions, because unless something has changed we needed quite a bit of time to pick up our reserved tickets!
