Museum Employee ID for admission?

My daughter will be in Rome, Florence, Venice for a very short trip- she is traveling with her boyfriend’s family who have not much interest at all in museums. My daughter works at the National Gallery of Art in DC and has an employee ID for NGA.
I am wondering if that ID would allow her free entrance to any of the museums?
Mostly wondering about Capitoline and National Museum in Rome- (she has been to Florence and already has ticket/reservations for Borghese)
Just trying to find ways for her to get to a few museums- quickly/inexpensively!

She is also an Art History doctoral student and has that student ID- if that is of any use?

I should add that one of her co-workers at NGA says she was able to use her NGA ID in Florence a few yrs ago- just need to know if that is still accepted for admission and if so- where?

Thanks

I suggest you e-mail the museums for a definitive answer.

Not many people here would have any experience with your question. I am guessing it would be viewed as a professional courtesy and many depend on the ticket taker at the door. A student ID might get a discount. Our experience with discounts is that they are restricted to EU citizens. You can always ask.

I know there is in France and would assume so in Italy. She should ask her professional forums.

You won't get any reductions at the Vatican museums. the reductions are for students up to 26 with an identity document.

It looks like these are the conditions for free entry at other sites:

  • members of ICOM (International Council of Museums);

  • members of ICCROM (International organization for conservation of cultural heritage);
    For all other categories you need to be an EU member or work at an EU museum or school. You can find the complete list here:

http://www.coopculture.it/en/the-colosseum.cfm#

click on the "ticket office" link and then, under "admission tickets", where it says "other". This will show you all the conditions for admission.

Thanks Donna- Very helpful info.
She is good to go for Vatican--has a private tour booked, same for Colosseum- that's about all she could get the family to commit to ahead of time!
I have forwarded the info you provided to her- she can figure it out!

ChristineH, has your daughter gone on the trip, and was the staff ID accepted in Rome and Venice? Which museums?

She was there in June- and no- her NGA ID was not accepted anywhere!
I am not sure of all places she tried but do know it was not accepted at Capitoline, Barberini, Uffizi, Bargello

I am a museum employee and while my museum in the US allows free admission (plus three guests) for museum employees from anywhere in the world, I've never had my museum card accepted for free admission in Europe. In fact, the first time I tried to use it, in Amsterdam, I was openly mocked by the admissions staff.

Smaller museums may be more accommodating. I have successfully used college faculty ID at many museums, if not for free admission, at least for a discount. Sometimes a city Museum Pass evens out the cost for larger places.
