Does anyone have up-to-date information on whether this museum is open? Roberto are you out there? Someone I know, who is living in Florence, tells me it's closed. The website, however, says nothing about closure. I will admit that I didn't get very far on the website before getting a message telling me that a link I tried to follow didn't exist. Some knowledgeable help would be appreciated.
The website: operaduomo.firenze.it can be switched to English and you can send an email (contact info at the bottom of the web page), in case you don't get better info here.
The two times I have visited Florence, I went to this museum and was very impressed. I love the wooden sculpture of Mary Magdalene by Donatello - so moving. Lots of other beautiful works as well. This museum seems to be less well known, and I have not had to stand in line to enter. I didn't see any indication of closure on the website either.
I was there two weeks ago. It is open, but primarily only to see the doors. You can also see Michelangelo's last work, but you can't see much more of the collection - no Donatello Mary Magdalene, no relics, no models of the Duomo.
Because of that, the ticket also covers most of the other activities such as the climb up the duomo and the Santa Reparta church as well as I think the Baptistery (didn't do any of them this trip)
The reason for the closure of most of the museum is due to renovation and enlargement of the museum. Don't know when the planned completion date sis.
So, both my local source and the website are accurate; the museum is open - - sort of - - and closed. Thank you, Shirley for clearing up the apparent contradiction. That was exactly the information I was hoping to get. I'll join the chorus of those who acclaim this forum.
