Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples

Do I need to make advance reservations for this museum? Coming from Rome the afternoon of a Thursday. How long should I expect to take to do "it right"? Thanks

Also do I need to phone for a taxi from the museum to get back to the train station or are there some waiting there?

No, you do not need reservations. It is a fanstasic museum, and each person has their own idea of what they want to see and how long to spend. Our friends could have spent all day; we were happy with a good hour and half.

Rick does an excellent job in his book covering how to get from the train station to the museum.

Fredrica,

As the previous reply mentioned, everyone has a different opinion on how much time it takes to "do it right". One thing you might consider would be to arrange a guided tour with one of the local guides listed in the Italy book. If you'll be travelling with others and can split the cost, I believe it would be good value. You'll learn far more with a guide than by wandering around on your own (and will be able to ask questions, which you can't do with an Audioguide). I certainly found the having a "live" guide was far better.

If you have time, there's a Church not too far from the Museum that has an incredible marble statue of Christ covered by a shroud. I can't remember the name of the Church, but it might be listed in the Guidebook.

I don't recall whether there were Taxi's waiting outside the Museum, but the staff may be willing to call one for you. Be sure to read the caveats regarding Naples Taxi's in the Italy Guidebook.

Happy travels!
