I had no idea such a phenomenon existed, so it was a big surprise when we were visiting the Baths of Diocletian in Rome one evening and looked up through where the roofs used to be and saw these birds. We watched and videoed them for almost an hour. I think the swarming appeared extra lovely and mysterious because it was framed by the walls of the Baths instead of by city lights and buildings and traffic.
I've seen this a few times from Ponte Sisto around twilight.
