Has anyone actually stayed in Murano, or Lido? We're looking for a place for 4 adults, but with a canal view and balcony. Any suggestions?? It's for 4 nights in May of 2011.
Try to stay in Venice proper. With 4 adults try apartment rentals.
Lido is unlike Venice because of the cars allowed. Murano, while interesting is bit too far removed for a main place to stay for your entire trip.
or try www.venere.com for hotel rooms.
What are your reasons for wanting to stay off the main island? Cost? If so, what's your budget? Fortunately, you're planning well in advance. I bet the suggestion for an apartment rental will indeed be the way to go.
You can also try vrbo.com. They have listings for apartments in Venice. Used them twice for apartment rentals in Venice. Have been very pleased.
Have you been to Venice before and is there a particular reason you want to stay on Murano or the Lido? Have been to Venice 4 times over the last several years, most recently last July for 6 nights, but have never been to the Lido. Been to Murano several times and it makes a great daytrip from Venice along with our favorite island of Burano. If you plan to spent time in Venice and are staying in Murano you will spent quite abit of time going back and forth. We enjoy renting apartments while traveling and there are many agencies that can help you, some which are mentioned above. A few agencies that rent apartments:
www.truly-venice.com Almost rented through them for last July, Daniela was very prompt in answering my e-mails. We ended up renting an apt. through Hotel Campiello (in R.S. bk), as we had previous rented an apt. through them.
www.vrbo.com rented an apt. in Florence through them, worked out very well.

Pat my sister & I stayed at Hotel Conterie in Murano.
We've been to Venice many times and wanted a few nights on Murano to wander the entire island and check out all the glass studios.
Hotel Conterie was nice but not canal views and no real amenities. Pleasant but not grand by any means....but the price is right.
It was a really nice experience but definitely NOT in place of staying in Venice if this is your first trip to the area.
Lido is worth an explore but for the reasons mentioned above, cars/distance, I wouldn't spend my limited time staying on the Lido.

I do know of a great apartment that I've stayed in on the Grand Canal near the San Toma vaporetto stop. It's 200 euro per night, 2 bedroom, 2 bath and glorious Grand Canal views!
I'll post below with the name and link....have to look it up!
Have a wonderful time in Venice!!
as promised...The name is Palazzo Tiepoletto.
