Multiple Questions re:travel

I posted this morning but my post vanished so I will try to repeat what I wrote earlier.
1.Due to security are you allowed to leave bags at the train stations? Siena for example?
2. I am staying in an agritourissmo SE of Siena and wondered if it made more sense to take my car to Siena , park and then take the train to Cinque Terre for the day, or are there places to park in La Spezia?
3.Should I bring a handheld GPS or will my iPhone be good enough?
4.Do buses run from Salerno to Positano?
5. I looked at booking train tickets from Salerno to Venice. It was cheaper to take the train to Rome and then get a train from Rome to Venice than to go from Salerno to Venice...why? 20Euros cheaper the first way.

Thanks!

Hi, kwilding. Some answers:

  1. You can check bags at most train stations, you need to show identification. Bahn.de is a good site for looking up timetables and train station facilities.

  2. You can park La Spezia.

  3. Don't know.

  4. Buses run from Salerno to Amalfi, then you can take another bus or a ferry to Positano.

  5. Don't know why, perhaps less demand on one route.

By the way, your original post is still there -- if you go into your account you can see it and delete it so you don't get answers in two places.

It hasn't disappear it is still there or at least I can find. But delete now that you have posted a duplicate question.

  1. Most trains stations have bag checks but not lockers.
  2. I personally would bring a good GPS with up to date maps.
  3. Yes
  4. What site were you using to book train tickets? That could explain it. What dates?

Among all people traveling from Salerno to Venice, there are probably many who would prefer a direct train, no connections, although they may not all like the 6:30 a.m. departure time. Trenitalia.com has three price levels for all long distance trains and limited seats at the two lower prices on each departure. The lowest fare on this train is 69 euros.

This is probably because, either, you took two different companies which have different promotions:
Italy or freccia Rossa
Another explanation could be that between Salerno and Rome you have identified a regionale or a freccia Argento (a little slower than the Rosso).
Time of the departure of the train might be another explanation.

The train station in Siena doesn't have a place to store your bags. The bigger stations have lockers or rooms that have a agent you leave your bag with. But in Siena you will have to take your bag with you.

kwilding,
Siena train station does not have a luggage hold but Siena bus station does.

By the way, Siena is a very congested city for auto travel and parking is very difficult. Most take a bus into the city center, and the train station's on the outskirts.
