Multiple Leg Train Tickets

We're planning a day trip from Venice to Padua and then Verona and then back to Venice. Do I have to buy three "point to point" tickets or does Trenitalia have one ticket for multiple legs. I can't determine that from their website.

It depends on the train. In Italy all trains except the Regional require a seat reservation, therefore, you need an individual tickets for a specific train, time, and seat. You would need a specific ticket for each leg. If using a Regional train you could buy one ticket in one general direction of travel and get on and off in one direction. And of course a return ticket. If a triangle of travel you would need three tickets. Regional ticket cannot be purchased in advance and must be validated when used.

In general, you will have one ticket for each train you are on. There is no such thing on Trenitalia in Italy as a single ticket with multiple legs. On longer journeys where you change trains, you will have one ticket for each train you will be on. No single ticket with multiple legs. Caution. If you purchase a ticket on a high-speed Eurostar run from Venice to Vernona with the intention of hopping off for awhile at Padua and then getting on a later train, don't do it. As soon as you get off at Padua and the train departs, your ticket is toast. However, you can do exactly that on the Regionale train as no seat reservations are permitted and more importantly, once you validate your ticket in Venice, you have 6 hours to complete your journey. During that 6 hours, you can indeed get off a Padua and get back on a later Regionale train to continue your journey. Note however, that the Regionale train runs are about half the fare of the high-speeds but, they also take twice as long as they are slower and make many more stops.
