Multi city rail travel

Hey there. We are 6 ppl travelling from Milan to Como (for a wedding), back to Milan to get a train to either Rome or Naples(cost dependant) and then hire a car to drive along the Amalafi Coast.... our base being Sorrento possibly. I'm unsure what sort of train ticket to get. Pls Advice

You take a train all the way to Naples, why can't you take also a train to Sorrento from Naples? A car is not really needed in the Amalfi coast or Sorrento. It gets congested and parking is scarse.

You just buy tickets as needed. Discount tickets are available if purchased in advance, on-line, but they are no-change, no-refund if plans change.

I would recommend against basing in Sorrento. It is nice to see for a day but not much morevery touristy with cruise ships. Positano is a better base and you can still ferry to both Capri and Amalfi/Ravello from there

All sounds good except renting the car. Roberto is correct about how crowded it is there and the scarcity of the parking. You can easily ride the SITA bus from Sorrento down to Amalfi and then reverse. You can sit on the side of the bus facing the ocean and occasionally watch the edge of the road disappear. The road is really narrow. For the train, you can stay on the same train from Milan to Naples. If you buy your tickets in advance (i.e. 119 days out), you can get fares as low as 19Euro. Note that Trenitalia will not let you book 6 people online. Max is 5. From Naples to Sorrento, you take the Circumvesuviana train. Just over an hour travel time and the fare is about 3Euro one-way.
