Be sure and watch the video...the story says that Atrani is less than a mile from Amalfi. Just another reminder of the dangers that often go hand-in-hand with spectacular places. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100910/ap_on_re_eu/eu_italy_mudslides
That's scary. We visited my husbands relatives just after their area in Campania was ravaged by major mudslides back in 1998. They drove us around the devastated area. Some of the surviving buildings had mud splatters two stories high.
Eileen, I saw the report on Atrani on the News tonight. I didn't get a chance to check the Italian News (Telegiornale-24) today, but I suspect that was the "lead story". It looks brutal! Apparently there's at least one person still missing, and crews are bringing in heavy equipment to start clearing the mess.
Very sad to see...especially after visiting there and eating at a couple of the restaurants that were in the piazza and by the coast that were hit by the mudslide. Just hope it dries up soon and it can be a quick and complete recovery for the town...
Sad news.
That's sad! We left Sorrento early,on the 9th,cause of that rain. It was pouring down hard!
