MUC Airport- how much time to get thru passport control?

greetings!

We will fly from SFO to MUC to VCE in March 2024.
In MUC-Munich we have just 1 hour and 40 minutes to get from our arriving United flight to our Air Dolomiti flight on to Venice.
web research says that United uses Terminal 1 and Dolomiti uses Terminal 2.
Currently we plan to only take carry-on luggage and sit in the front of the plane for quick exit in Munich.

I'm trying to figure out if we will have enough time?

I've never flown thru MUC airport, so any advice is appreciated.

My questions:
Will we need to go thru passport control on Munich arrival?
Will we need to go thru customs control on Munich arrival?
How long does it take to get from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2?

I transferred planes in Munich this spring. There were no delays in going through passport control. Customs will be in VCE but that should be just a walk through the green door unless you have something to declare. My experience says an hour and 40 minutes is sufficient.

United is normally Terminal 2 (Pretty much all *A airlines use 2).
Terminal 2 in MUC has been purposely build to make short transfers possible, with a MCT of 30 minutes. With 1h40 you have enough time to get bored and annoyed at having such a long layover inflicted upon you.

You will go through passport control (as this is where you enter the Schengen Area) but will not need to do customs or security. Any luggage will just be tagged to VCE, so there is no need to limit yourself to carry on only.

In VCE you will go through customs, but that will be just walking through the green channel, unless you have stuff to declare.

MUC is very easy to transfer at.

Yes, since you will be entering the Schengen area, you need to go through passport control but not through customs since you are not exiting here. Getting from T1 to T2 takes about 5-7 mins via the train.

Overall, you should have plenty of time to make this transfer.

your UA flight will arrive at T2, likely gates H (T2 main) or K series at the T2 satellite.
your EN (Air Dolomiti) flight will depart from the same T2, likely gates G series (main T2).
G and H are in the same T2 main terminal but on different levels (H for extra Schengen, while G for Intra Schengen)
Occasionally the EN flight might depart from the T2 Satellite gates K.
The T2 satellite is across the tarmac from T2 proper (to the East of it) and requires you to take an underground people mover that goes under the tarmac.
Passport control will be at MUC but it is generally very quick, therefore 1h40m should be sufficient provided no major delays on the arrival flight.

You can see where T2 satellite is situated in comparison to the main terminals in the Google Maps here

The MUC T2 map (including the satellite t2) is here. Click on View Interactive Map

IF your first flight is on time! Are these two separate tickets or all one? You can use Flight Aware to research the on time record of your first flight.
Good luck!

Munich is a super efficient airport. I would not be too concerned - the minimum connection time at MUC is 30 mins

Thank you everyone for the helpful information. And yes Pat, I am smart enough to know that all is subject to arriving in MUC as scheduled.

I agree with the previous posters that you shouldn't stress too much. The Munich airport knows what it's doing and things definitely move. I've had multiple connections through there and never experienced a problem. And if, worst case scenario, you are delayed and do miss your connection, Munich is such a hub that they'll get you on another flight to Venice pretty quickly.

I just did this transfer 3 weeks ago in 40 minutes after my United flight from SFO was delayed 1.5 hours. Passport control was quick once I found the connecting gates. I was in the front of the plane and it was easy to find .
