We plan to tour Mt. Etna. We would like to go to the top. Rather than drag bulky warm clothes that we are only going to wear there(MT.Etna) along thru our whole trip, are there places close by the volcano that rent things like heavy jackets, hats etc.? Suggestions? Thanks

I don't know of anyplace that rents jackets, etc., but October nights can be cool enough for a sweater. If you layer, you should be okay.

We visited Sicily in Sepember of 2012. It was quite warm and humid in Taormina. However, going to the top of Etna, the temperature decreased dramatically. You can take the funicular (I forget to what elevation.) From there you take a guided tour in a four wheel drive Jeep to the top. Be prepared for the temperature change and wear good hiking boots. Not to be missed!
Of course, tours can be cancelled if Etna is erupting.

I did rent a coat in the upper funivia station, as Giovanna suggested.
It was June when I went up and it was indeed quite cold up there.
