Hopefully the airport will reopen later or tomorrow.
Ugh! Yes, I heard about this today. In fact, just last night I was joking with my husband that the 12-day inclement weather we've been dealing with here in Sicily will probably be topped off with an eruption of Mt Etna!
Fortunately we were not flying out of Catania today but will be soon. Will have to see how things go. Currently in Ortigia and we were eating lunch outside earlier and wondering why all these little black specks were appearing on our table and food -- we were informed that it was probably ash from Etna over 100 miles away as the volcano was growing active. This has certainly been one of our crazier trips to Italy.
Had not heard this news yet, so thank you for sharing - We flew into Catania Saturday. We had ash raining on us here in Ortigia today at an outdoor cafe.
We were caught in this situation a few years ago. Closure of the airport in Catania depends on which way the wind is blowing the ash plume. We had to hightail it to Palermo to get a flight out.
Interestingly, the residents in Catania were pretty blasé about it - Mama Etna does this more often than we know, and its a normal part of their life.
