Would like to go as far up Mt. Etna as possible in a total 4-hour trip, door to door, from Catania. A couple of questions: is it worth doing in late March, if it happens to be a clear day? And does it seem doable to go by taxi (i know more expensive than public transportation)? How far up can you get and be back in 4 hours tonCatania?
First consideration would be weather and road conditions. If you get to the parking lot area, there are 4-wheel drive vehicles that can take you further up, but I don't know if they run year-round - that would depend on weather/roads. It sounds like an expensive and somewhat iffy day trip.
Some friends and I drove fairly far past the parking area (there are two routes) and saw lots of lava fields from the previous eruptions. It was June and the roads and visibility were perfect.
Thank you. Yes, weather an issue. This would be late March (next month). When you arrive at the point where you transfer to 4x4s, are you near the top? Do you see much at that point?
