Mt. Etna day trip advice?

My husband and I want to visit Mt. Etna from Catania during our 2-week visit to Sicily in May. We are 68 and 71 and are in reasonably good shape but have never done mountain (or serious) hiking or been in high altitudes. We are interested in an adventure day but want to be careful not to overdo it. The cable car and 4x4 experiences look good but we're wary if going too high is not a good idea or if the terrain is too loose and insecure to make it stressful.

There are SO many different companies and tours offered, it's a bit overwhelming. Ideally, we want one that picks up and drops off at the hotel in Catania but meeting at a meeting point is also probably doable. We are thinking morning, not evening.

Etna Tribe keeps coming up in searches. We also see Trails of Sicily. We understand Get Your Guide is a 3rd party operator so perhaps best not to use. There are so many others.

Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with a tour company or particular tours they really liked? We see some are combined with other stops too (e.g. a ravine, a cove). Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much.

We've used Etna People and had a great experience! https://www.etnapeople.com/

In fact we are doing another tour with them next week. The only thing is they collect from Taormina, but it's very easy to get to Taormina on a bus from Catania. It's just over an hour and they can collect you from the bus station.

We used Sicily Life in April 2025 for the Gastronomic tour of Etna, and it was perfect, not strenuous at all for our party of four. We were picked up at our Taormina AirBnB, driven up to about 6000 feet where there were these Alpine-like shops and dried lava flows. Walked around and heard the volcano thundering, even got a little ash rain. Then we were driven to the Alcantara Gorge, which was impressive. Finally we were driven to the Gambino Winery for a light dinner of wines, Sicilian salsiccia and cheese & vegetables. Just wonderful, and memorable!

Another vote for ETNA PEOPLE! Roberto, our guide, was wonderful. So easy, so much fun and a great value.

We had a wonderful second tour with Etna People this past week (our first was in 2020) and I wanted to issue a correction to what I said above- they do collect directly from Catania. If you're coming from Taormina they'll take you to the northern slope of Etna and if you're coming from Catania they'll take you to the southern slope. I've done both now and both were very good, and we found them a great company to work with, with excellent guides.
